made it!

Each Census is taken as of Midnight Sunday. Intrigued by the following

1881 Census

James Stevens         Head    Marr  29    Agrl Labourer                   Somerset, Wedmore
Charlotte Stevens    Wife     Marr   22                                            Somerset, Shipham
Eva Stevens           Dau                  1                                            Somerset,Wedmore
                               Dau                    b]born 11 PM Sunday[/b]    Somerset,Baltonsboro

The unnamed young lady qualified with a whole to spare.

When compiling the return after the event, the enumerator was aware of the arrival. Would there have been provision to add a name at a later date - once the parents had decided on a name time and might have wanted it done.

Couldn't have been an isolated instance.

regards

No, the enumerator copied the schedules into the enumerator books in the week following the census night, then they were sent to the Census Office in London. The censuses were carried out for statistical purposes and not for the benefit of future family historians, so the lack of a name was irrelevant.
