Drovers named Jones
« on: Wednesday 06 April 05 22:07 BST (UK) »
My GG Grandfather and his father were Welsh drovers, with the surname of JONES. I know that Drovers moved the cattle from small communities to larger markets, and there are clear routes from the Welsh Mountains to the South East of England and London. Many country lanes are still called "droves" if this was one of their main uses in the past. My problem is how do I trace such a nomadic family with such a commen name as Jones? There are links to Sussex and Chiswick (west London/Middx) in the 1840s to 1880s, but nothing showing any additional details. Any ideas?
Jones, Ellis, Barker, Bates, Hackney, Cooper, Kirk, Eyre, Davies, Harris, Doney & Pearce.
Sussex, Cornwall, Lincolnshire, to name but a few!
