Friedrich Plate
« on: Tuesday 28 September 10 15:14 BST (UK) »
Hi

This is my first time on Rootschat so hope I am putting this in the correct place.

My father Friedrich Plate went missing, presumed dead during the 2nd World War in Stalingrad in Russia.

I have never known anything about him. My mother has always been reluctant to tell me anything about him.

He was born in 1920 possibly in Schalksmuehle in Westphalen, Germany. He was an amateur musician, I don't know what instrument he played.

He went into the Wehrmacht. He was stationed in Stalingrad from where he went missing, presumed dead.

That is all I know.

Can anyone help me find out about him?

Thank you

Tillly

Hi there  :) Welcome to Rootchat

I don't think I can offer much help, but from what I have read of this period in time, from my understanding, the Germans were excellent record keepers.  What records survived though, I suppose is different entirely.

I found a couple of links, that may be helpful to you.

http://www.feldgrau.com/ - Research on the German Armed Forces 1918-1945 more on the history of the forces, but may have contacts that could point you in the right direction for service records?

http://worldwar2database.com/html/stalingrad.htm - background on Stalingrad

If you had your parents marriage certificate, it would tell you (hopefully) the name of your father's father, his occupation etc.

I do wish you the best of  luck in your search

You may know this already, but one Friedrich PLATE is commemorated on the war memorial in Schalksmühle:
http://www.denkmalprojekt.org/dkm_deutschland/schalksmuehle_nrw.htm

I can't find a corresponding match on the Volksbund site (volksbund.de) who was born in 1920, although there is a Fritz PLATE from Haldensleben nr Magdeburg who died in Russia in 1943, and a Fritz Hugo PLATE born 21 Oct 1920, birthplace unspecified, who died in Russia on 1 Dec 1942.
Volksbund also shows that the Edmund PLATE listed on the Schalksmühle war memorial was born in Muhlerhagen (just 1.5 miles north of Schalksmühle) on 23 Oct 1919 and died at Cuxhaven on 2 March 1943 - a brother or cousin perhaps?
