Hi JDGen, thank you for your reply, I do have some info from Stockport Library. My GG Grandfather was John Beard of 13, Richard st, Portwood, Stockport who went to war (WW1) with 7 or 8 sons & my G Grandfather Joseph Beard was the only survivor of those on the elusive picture I am in search of. My Grandfather Francis Beard returned from WW2, he was a Sargent in the Royal Artillery.

Joseph Beard played football for Heaton Norris FC which changed to Stockport FC & later to Stockport County FC, have picture of the team & my Mother let a woman take a copy while in Stockport Library, the woman was writing a book which included some Beards but, I don't know her name or the book.

My main aim is to find the picture (A Family Go To War) on the front page of a newspaper, been through many but, as yet it has eluded me & my sister, Thank you again for your reply, Spatts.

Thank you Barbara, I read quite a bit about The Purple Gang, it was interesting, going to keep it in my favorites list so I can read more later. The Joe Beard is related to another family that I have come across before, think they originate from Macclesfield but, thank you for taking a interest, Spatts.

Hello Spatts

I too am searching for the newspaper photograph of A Family go to War of the Beard family of Stockport.  My 2 x Gt Grandmother (Grace Jones, nee Prichard) was widowed from her first husband when she married widower and close neighbour, John Beard of Richard Street, Stockport. John Beard had four sons, Joseph, John William, Walter and Frank. Together, Grace and John raised quite a few sons, most of whom went to war and never came back.  I have been searching for this photograph, which family members have spoken of, but never found it.  Would you like to share info?
I look forward to hearing from you.
regards

Hi Mack,

John Beard marries Mary Hough in Stockport 1885, later John marries Grace Jones (widow) nee Prichard in Stockport 1899.

Children with Mary:-

Francis Beard b1908, Stockport. My Grandfather.
Margaret Beard b1910, Bolton.
Elizabeth Beard b1911, Stockport.
Joseph Beard b1914, Stockport, probably before his father enlisted.
Mary Beard b1916, Stockport, must have been on home leave.

Joseph b1886 was killed in action, along with brothers John William & Walter. There were also 4 step brothers killed:-

Richard Jones/Beard b1885.
William Jones/Beard b1887.
George Jones/Beard b1890.
Thomas Jones/Beard b1892.

The only two that survived was John Beard b1867 who was wounded & died some time later at home & Frank Beard who returned when the war ended.

Regards,

Spatts.
