Lilleshall Census Look Up Please - 1841/51
« on: Friday 08 April 05 16:24 BST (UK) »
I have this family in 1871

Name Age in 1871 Birthplace Relationship Civil Parish County/Island .
Saml Toddington  53  Staffordshire, England Head  Wrockwardine  Shropshire
Sarah Toddington  49  Lilleshall, Shropshire, England Wife  Wrockwardine  Shropshire
Willm Toddington  16  Lilleshall, Shropshire, England Son  Wrockwardine  Shropshire
James Toddington  14  Lilleshall, Shropshire, England Son  Wrockwardine  Shropshire
Harriett Toddington  13  Lilleshall, Shropshire, England Daughter  Wrockwardine  Shropshire
Thomas Toddington  9  Lilleshall, Shropshire, England Son  Wrockwardine  Shropshire
Esther Toddington  6  Lilleshall, Shropshire, England Daughter  Wrockwardine  Shropshire

I would like to find Samuel in 1841 to find if he was married by then. 1851 would help narrow down the dates as I could check childrens ages.

I am trying to find if his wife was Sarah Attwood ch. 1822, daughter of Richard and Anne, so if anyone has the 1841 I would really appreciate it if the Attwood family could be traced too.

Thank you.

Hi

I have the 1841 census and have them on there. I have a collection of data too and have them in 51 and 61 but I don't have the actual census so don't know who is living in what house

Thomas 6 months? ( this is what the transcription says)

Lilleshall baptisms

Thank you so much for the information.

Richard Attwood who died was the husband of Ann, father of the Sarah I'm looking for.

Can you explain what a removal order is? Would they have been removed from the Parish because they were unable to support themselves and sent to Wellington where other relatives lived?

Ann actually gave birth to another daughter Mary who was baptised at Lilleshall June 1824 so she must have been pregnant when she was 'removed'. They don't appear on the Wellington 1841 transcription I have, so maybe I have to look at Ann remarrying.

Thanks again for all your help, you've given me lots to think about.

I am sorry I don't know what one is but I would imagine its what you said after her husband died. maybe Ann was originally from Wellington and they returned her to her own parish

Hi Helen

I'm pretty sure you're on the right lines here - many women with children were returned to their own parish when they became unable to support themselves for whatever reason, by virtue of the 1664 Settlement Act.   They were 'removed' to the parish from whence they originated, unless they were able to establish residency in the new parish by various means.  I'm sure you can find out more if you Google "Poor Law" or "Settlement Act".

Bel

PS   I'm discovering more and more ancestors from Lilleshall (mainly Fallows, Preece and the ubiquitous Jones) so if you come across these in your research, do PM me!
Researching
ARTHUR, ROBERTS, LEWIS and WILLIAMS in Denbighshire/Merionethshire/Glamorgan
EVANS and JONES in Montgomeryshire
FALLOW(E)S, JONES, PREECE and GITTON in Shropshire
and the list keeps growing...
(March 2006) Now looking for HINKS, SPARKES, INGRAM from West Midlands area

Cheers Bel,

I'm sure that must have been what happened to Ann.

Her and Richard married at Wrockwardine so I'd assumed that was where her family were from but I haven't found any evidence. She was a Pritchard and they seem to be all over the area.

Richard was from Lilleshall but seems to be the only sibling that survived long enough to become a parent, and he didn't exactly manage that for long LOL!

There were other Attwood relatives in Wellington who may have helped out. Richard had plenty of Aunts, Uncles and cousins there.

Hi!
I can add a little to the 1851 census info on your Toddingtons. There were two households within a couple of houses of each other, (two households in between them) but the census images I have don't include the addresses (or indexes!). The first was

           John Toddington   (Widower)          65     Blacksmith
Sarah      (Daughter - Unmarried)    27     At Home
           Elizabeth (     "         -       "         )    24         "
           Henry      (Son)                                13         "
John        (Son - Widower)               26(?)  Engine Fitter

All born Lilleshall.

The second household:

           Samuel Toddington (Head)             31    Labourer
           Sarah           "         (Wife)               28
           Frederick      "         (Son)                  7
           John             "         (  "  )                  5
           Richard         "         (  "  )                  3
           Sarah           "         (Daughter)         8 months

All these also state born in Lilleshall.

Hope this helps.

Thanks very much for that information.

I am going to order a birth cert of one of Samuel and Sarah's children which will prove/disprove the Attwood connection.
