1881 census..missing family
« on: Thursday 21 October 10 07:59 BST (UK) »
I was wondering if anyone could help.

I am looking for a family in 1881 they are Frances Lowe nee Cooper b 1851 and her two children William b 1876 and Robert b 1878. All were born in Shropshire but I believe were now residing in Nottinghamshire.  I know in June 1881 Frances gives birth to a daughter Mary in Birmingham.  I also think her husband Robert b 1844 is in lodgings in Nottingham.

I just cant find Frances and the two boys any suggestions?

Hi,

My immediate thought is 'mistranscription'!  For instance, the name LOWE could have been mistranscribed as LOVE or LOW.  If it was written as LOW on the census form this could in turn have been mistranscribed as LAW.

If you know exactly where in Shropshire they were all born I would try a search which excludes the surname but includes the place of birth.

Based on the 1891 census, the younger lad (and Mum) were born Lilleshall, Salop.

Back in the 1881, I suspect they arent using this PoB - they wont be teased out by any combination of their names, ages and that PoB .....  :(

Also, have you located Frances Cooper in 1851/61/71 associated with Lilleshall  ???

Or is she the Fanny Cooper from Cheswardine ?

Sorry can't help with 1881 census - don't know if this will be of any help with tracing Fanny on 1881 census - perhaps she's staying with a relative  :-\

Fanny COOPER ch. 31/1/1858 Lilleshall, Shropshire mother Mary COOPER

Fanny COOPER ch. 13/7/1851 Cheswardine father William mother Martha

other christenings at Cheswardine to parents named William & Martha

Mary 25/7/1854
Henry 6/3/1859
Samuel 11/3/1849 (father's name only - William)

marriage

William COOPER to Martha PRESTON

all above IGI extracted records

If Francis' place of birth on later censuses is correct (Lilleshall), then the birth in 1858 in Lilleshall must be her.

But that would make her only 16 when she got married.

So, unless she lied about her age (far from improbable) there should be a licence out there somewhere.

Do you have the birth certificate of Mary, from 1881?
What is the address on that?
Once you have that, you can do an address search.

The same as everyone else have had no luck finding Frances LOWE 1851 with children William 1876 & Robert 1878 on 1881 census. I assume that daughter Mary LOWE  born after census night in Warwickshire 1881.

Have checked for them in Warwickshire, Nottingham & Shropshire. Wrong surname  :-[  there’s this entry for 1881 c
Robert COOPER 1876 Shifnal, Shropshire grandson Isaac & Mary COOPER
~~~~~~~~--------------
Is this baptism record related to your Robert LOWE & Frances
Samson LOWE
Baptism date 8/8/1883 St. Mary Church Bulwell, Nottingham
Father Robert LOWE occ. Bricklayer Mother Frances
Abode Deptford Street
(I'm afraid nothing on FreeREG for William 1876 & Robert LOWE 1878)
This looks as if it’s them in
1891 census Nottingham
Robert LOWE (1844) Shropshire, Frances (1851) Shropshire, Robert (1878) Shropshire, Mary (1881) Birmingham, Samson (1884) Nottingham
There’s a marriage in Nottingham 1905
Sampson LOWE (1883)
Daisy Clarence WRIGHT (1886)
~~~~~~~~----
Do you have the marriage certificate of
Robert LOWE to Frances COOPER
1874 Dec q Newport Sh
to check their ages & their father’s names and occupations

Could this be Frances’ husband Robert LOWE christening?

IGI extracted christenings in Lilleshall, Shropshire
parents named as William LOWE & Mary

Anne LOWE 25/8/1833
Samuel 25/8/1833
Elizabeth 11/6/1837
John 12/4/1840
James 16/5/1842
ROBERT 16/6/1844
Mary 4/6/1848
~~~~~~~~------
Could any of these christenings be related in some way to
Frances COOPER 31/1/1858 Lilleshall mother named Mary COOPER
IGI extracted christenings in Lilleshall, Shropshire
Parents named William COOPER & Mary
John COOPER 20/5/1832
Sampson 27/7/1834
David 24/4/1836
Rebecca 29/4/4838
Emma 30/8/1840
Sarah 16/6/1844
~~~~~~~~--------------
Did William LOWE (1876) marry? Do you have this certificate?

Marriage 1904 Nottingham names on same page William LOWE Kate GODDARD latest census there's William LOWE 1876 & Kate living in Nottingham. These could be their children Mary LOWE (1907), Sampson Walter (1908) & Herbert (1911)?

**ADDED**

I see that you have another post regarding the LOWE family and it answers some of the questions - have added the link here  :)
