Help with Parish Record
« on: Tuesday 30 November 10 23:50 GMT (UK) »
I have a Parish Record and the text is:
19 Jan 1768 William, base s. of Eliz. Rowley, bap.
Book: Burials, wedd. & Christenings, (Burial)
Collection: Shropshire, Shrewsbury - St Mary Parish Registers, Lichfield Diocese.

My question is:  What does "base s." stand for please?

Hi

Base S. stands for Base son, in other words an illegitimate son.  That's why no father is shown on the record.

Jool
Robbins - Wolverhampton.
Spooner - Monmouthshire & Wolverhampton.
Warner & Loundes - Dudley/West Bromwich.
Dod(g)son - Heysham/Liverpool/Wolverhampton

Thanks for that.  I had a feeling it may have been something like that, but hadn't heard that terminology before.
