John McCallum of Greenock
« on: Saturday 11 December 10 20:29 GMT (UK) »
Hoping to break through a brick wall! I have George McCallum born 1932 at 14 Inverkip Road Greenock. His parents were John McCallum, basketmaker and Jeanie McCallum Pedlar. George was later taken into care. Looking for a marriage for John & Jeanie or hoping to find John in 1911 census.... or anything! Thanks. Jim

Hi Jim
the 1911 census isn't due to be released until 2011
I think they said spring time  :D
have you had a look on Scotlands People site for the marriage
doing a general search on there, there are four marriages for John McCallum and spouse Jean/Jeanie
1910- 1935 but none in Greenock
there is 1 in Paisley,2 in Lochwinnoch, and 1 in Cathcart
do you have any Idea of Jeanie's maiden name

Thanks Elaine, I've just found a couple more clues which may or may not assist.

"John and Jeanie McCallum also had a daughter, Martha and son John and possibly one other child other than George. Not sure about birth dates yet.

I know John was an alcoholic and Jeanie committed suicide which lead the children being taken into care.

Not a happy story, but James' dad doesn't know much more about his family history and would really like to know more."

Thanks. Jim

hi Jim
there is only 1 birth for a Martha born 1920 in Greenock
I still cant see any marriage for this couple in the Greenock or surrounding area's
perhaps they were married outside the area
if we knew the mothers maiden name or any middle names of the
children it may help to narrow it down a bit
I think as this may lead to info on living people I will send you a PM if
I find anything

Hi

I have a long line of McCallums in my family and they are all tinkers, basket makers etc.
They were from across the water in Dumbartonshire, however I have always wondered about the McCallums in Greenock.

I'll send you a PM with my email so we can discuss.
