I endorse soupermoussi's suggestion of posing the question in the Newbie Questions of DNA-Forums but scan the Autosomal DNA, 23andme and FamilyTreeDNA / DNA FingerPrint / iGenea Fora for background beforehand; maybe also search this site for the FT DNA product that would be appropriate for you -Family Finder. This search doesn't come up with hits that answer your question but provides information from unbiased but informed folk that will be of interest to you.

I don't think Familyfinder is the best test for the OP; there are more specialised non-genealogical DNA tests available for close relationship testing, but I don't know the specifics as they are of no use for genealogical research.

But, as both me and Adnepos say, there are people on DNA-Forums who will be able to give accurate and very detailed advice about this.

Thank you both very much.

I will certainly have a project over othe Christmas break.  I shall wait until after the holidays to post on any other forum now.

Best wishes for Christmas.

Yes, but people on a DNA-specific forum (even if it is mainly for genetic genealogy) will be able to provide a better answer than us. They certainly will on the one I linked to as, as well as keen amateurs, there are professional Genecists that hang out there, along with a few anthropologists and historians  8)

I'm not aware of a a DNA forum for the police, adoptees, etc., although there may be one somewhere.

Just a thought...

Why not set up a genetic genealogy forum on RootsChat?

I think it is a good idea. A lot of people still do not know that DNA testing can solve genealogical brickwalls that the papertrail can't, is more reliable than the papertrail, and is generally informative all by itself. A forum here would help people learn.

But who would administer it?

Why not put an idea onto this thread and ask the Moderators for their comments?

Has anyone looked into the capability of DNA testing to definitely establish the precise nature of very close relationships, or indeed had the procedure done?

The case I have in mind is this:

A man believes that his Aunt (his mother’s younger sister) may, in fact, be his half-sister.  His mother is deceased but the Aunt would be prepared to have a DNA test.  Obviously there would have been different fathers.

However could the test firmly establish exactly what their relationship is bearing in mind that the maternal grandmother of the man is also either the mother or grandmother of the Aunt/Sister and therefore they are bound to share many characteristics?

Hi again Selina, Stumbled across a UK DNA company called DNA Worldwide who look like they can solve your problem. They have Sibling DNA Tests as well as Aunt/Uncle DNA tests (as well as the more usual STR/SNP testing) so should be able to prove the exact link of your rellies. See:-
