Just been reviewing the census info that we have as I still can't find her on the 1881.

On  the 1891 - RG12/2128/38/12   and the later censuses  Alice Small and James Mat*hew* are living Drayton in Hayles, Market Drayton and, as you said earlier:

Mary is living in Drayton Hayles in 1881 with her Uncle.

This seems quite a coincidence. I think that this Alice is a good poss for your Alice. I'll do some more searching.

Do you have Mary on later censuses?

Arrrrrrrrrrrrgh - would you believe that the other female on the marriage index is an Alice Broadhurst 


The Family Search Pilot site has this marriage

15 June 1882, Market Drayton

Alice Small,22, father - Charles Small  (so correct Alice)

and

Thomas Finney, 29

On the 1891 & 1901, there's a poss (correct age and b. Stockport) but this Alice is married to a Samuel Finney. In 1901, she's down as born Whittington!

Well JL,the first thing to say is of course it is the right Alice Small in the marriage.In the meantime I've been greedily eying the family of a Samuel and Alice Finney who are living in Wooton Staffs in 1891 and 1901.Alice is given as born in Stockport in 1891 and Whittington Shropshire in 19-01.I'm shortly to be given the 1911 detaills for the couple on another Site.

I think Alice married Thomas Finney b.c. 1853 and then married his younger brother, Samuel b.c. 1859 - see 1881 - RG11/3422/78/1

Yes JL I was pointed to the 1889 marriage on another Site.These relatives certainly don't make things easy for us!
