Lichfield burial for Acton
« on: Saturday 08 January 11 23:57 GMT (UK) »
I am interested in any Acton burials in Lichfield between 1833 and 1841 for the possible parents of two boys Francis 9 and John 8 who were in the Union Workhouse at 1841 Census.  The father's name may have been Thomas or John.  I presume they were there if one or both parents had died.

I'm searching from Tasmania, so grateful for any help with look-ups please.

I'm going to go to Lichfield Archives next week, so I'll have a look for you.  As far as I know they will have the Workhouse records, so will see what that may throw up.  There is also a death registration for John Acton in Lichfield District in March quarter of 1840.

Thanks BumbleB, that would be wonderful.  I did wonder whether the Workhouse records still existed and how I could access them, so you have anticipated my next question.  I must be getting a bit rusty.  Look forward to hearing from you again.

Sorry to report that workhouse records only exist from 1901 onwards, but I'm going into the Archives tomorrow and will talk to them to see what else is available.

I did find these two baptisms on the family search website:

St Philip, Birmingham:  Francis Acton, son of Thomas Acton and Sarah of Suffolk Street, born 20 October 1830, baptised 26 May 1831.

St Martin, Birmingham:  John Acton, son of Thomas Acton and Sarah, born 23 March 1833, baptised 31 March 1834.

I know some of the Birmingham registers are at Lichfield, so I'll double check those entries, if I can.

Not a very good day, I'm afraid  :'(

I can confirm the St Philip, Birmingham baptism of Francis Action son of Thomas Acton and Sarah, born 22 October 1830 and baptised 26 May 1831.  Thomas Acton was a Brick Maker and lived in Suffolk Street.

Unfortunately the BTs for St Martin, Birmingham stop at 1831, so could not verify the entry for John Acton in 1834.

The burial of John Acton in March quarter 1840 was for an 82 year-old man from Tamworth.

Sorry, I couldn't find anything else.

I have just gotten back in the groove of my research on my Francis Acton whose father was Thomas Acton, brickmaker in 1862. I am researching from Brisbane, Queensland so would like to share any information as the I could only find the work house entries when I stopped doing research in 1995 so I am interested in the information I see here. Best wishes.

Hi Codep - not sure we have the same people and I have no new info on the Actons of Lichfield.  How are you sure that your Francis Acton's father Thomas was a brickmaker?  If your family is related to the Francis and Elizabeth Acton who arrived in Brisbane in 1862, then we perhaps should compare notes.  Cheers.
