Gordon Square Wallsend
« on: Thursday 13 January 11 08:13 GMT (UK) »
Hello to everybody at RC.

I am writing this post on behalf of a friend who is researching Gordon Square in Wallsend.  Apparently there is a Gordon Square - or something like it in North Shields.

Does anyone have any information on the Wallsend Gordon Square?

I have found a photograph on a website but think that my friend would like to know more about it.

Yours NG.

There's a Gordon Square in Byker as well. That seems the nearest to Wallsend.

Hello again and thank you all for your replies.

I don't know the area at all but was told that the Gordon Square that Pat is interested in was at Wallsend.  It has long been pulled down.

I'll have to ask her which period she is interested in.

I have tried to find it by the 1901 census descriptions but have not been successful.  I think it may have been near Scrogg Road or Proctor Terrace but really do not have a clue.

She is doing some fiction writing and wants to be as realistic as possible.

Thank you anyway.

There is a picture of the place on Flickr.

Hi,

It might be worthwhile to ask the Local Studies Centre at North Shields Library if they have any old info:

email: Local.Studies@northtyneside.gov.uk

The staff are really helpful.

Hi.

Pat has already been down there but was too late to get much information before they closed.  It is a fantastic library and I am sure they will be able to help.  This website is a fantastic source too so thought I'd ask people if they know anything about it.

Thank you once again for your efforts.

Just read this thread. The Wallsend Gordon Square was just about where the Forum Shopping centre is now. It was demolished in the early 60s, or maybe a bit before - probably to make way for the Forum. There is a Flickr photo of tenement-style buildings, with washing lines strung across ... that could be right, if my childhood memory serves me well (likely it doesn't, of course).
Hope this helps.

Hello Katy24

Thank you for your reply.

I have already seen the Flickr image and have told Pat about it.  I think she wanted a more general idea of what it was like.
