CWGC site shows an A J Payne in the Royal Garrison Artillery who died 7/10/1918 and was buried in France.  This would be a reason for not finding a death registration for him.  I'm afraid that the entry doesn't give age or family details but you may be able to get more details from his service no. - 190736.
 I'm afraid this soldier is not the Austin Payne as refered to above, as this is my great great grandad Alfred John Payne as I have his medals with his name and service number 190736 on it serving as a gunner for Royal Garrison Artillery 216th siege battalion and died 7/10/18
