LANEs of Cumnor & Marcham
« on: Saturday 29 January 11 15:51 GMT (UK) »
A Margaret LANE (m.1627 d.1684) was linked to Marcham and had (at least) two brothers called William and Thomas LANE.

A PCC will of William LANE of Cumnor (proved 1652) states that he had children Francis, John, Richard, Thomas & Edith (+grandchildren) and that he gave leases in Marcham to his son John LANE.

Does anyone know how Margaret LANE d.1684 was connected to Wm and John? She must have been born 1590-1615 so was probably about the right age to have been one of William's children, or perhaps a younger sister, but she is not mentioned in his will.

Thanks Ian  :)

Eyrday; Is that really a name  ???

Could it be a mistransciption of Margery, i.e. Margaret?

Possibly a mistranscription of Edith.

Aha. That would make a lot of sense.

Another possible sceanrio is that although the Margaret in question said in her will that she had brothers called Wm & Tho LANE of Marcham, she, or the clerk, were being lazy and they were really her brother-in-laws.

Margaret (re?)married in 1627, but I have seen a record of there being a Margery widow of Edward LANE of Cumnor in 1626.

Perhaps my Margaret "LANE" was the widow of Edward LANE and her maiden name was something completely different?
