reid family
« on: Sunday 17 April 05 14:40 BST (UK) »
Hi i'm researching my Reid family who appear to be from Fores, Moray. My gggg grandfather was George Reid who married Mary Ann Morgan. They had 3 children born in Fores Frederick- 1848, Lavinia 1850 and Henry 1852. They then migrated to Australia. If anyone had any details/information that would be great.

Cheers Belinda :) :)

very sorry - i should have added that at the bottom before i posted the message.  :-[

they are the abbreviations for the newspaper references.
FG - Forres Gazette
COURANT - Courant

both are Morayshire newspapers as far as i know.

kind regards,
Lorna.

Thank you Lorna
Thanks for the info regarding the newspapers. I had a look at the Moray Council Site and found some more information about the inn that George and his family were residing at in Caroline St. I'll continue to look further.

I'm yet to work out how to actually get a look at the newspaper articles for births deaths baptisms and other entries about the inn. If you have any info about this it would also be appreciated. I don't think that local history centre in Kiama or Sydney Australia would have these newspapers.

 :) :) Cheers Belinda

Hi Belinda,

i had another look at the moray council website and have found the following info. - maybe you could try emailing them? as you already have the newspaper name, date, page and column number, and who the article refers to; maybe they would be willing to print out copies and send them to you.  :-\

The Local Heritage Centre in Elgin Library libstock@moray.gov.uk

Newspapers
Microfilm copies are kept of all local newspapers from 1827 to the present day. These newspapers are continually being indexed and these indexes include biographical information and entries from the "deaths" and "marriages" columns. The newspapers include the following: Banffshire Advertiser 1881-date, Banffshire Herald 1893-date, Banffshire Journal 1845-date, Dufftown News 1898-1982, Elgin Courant 1836-1967, Elgin Courier 1827-1874, Forres Gazette 1837-date, Northern Scot 1880-date, as well as a number of short-lived newspapers. A microfilm copy of the Aberdeen Journal is also held from 1747-1910.

Other Sources
A collection of about 8000 books and pamphlets on Moray includes family histories and individual biographies. There are also microfilm copies of interment registers for cemeteries in Moray 1845 to date; poor law registers 1845-1930; school admission and withdrawal registers 1868-date; valuation rolls 1855-date and many other series. There are also collections of private archives dating back to the 16th century. Many of these collections have been indexed.

kind regards,
Lorna.
