Martha LONG(or HURREN) of Easton
« on: Friday 04 February 11 11:10 GMT (UK) »
Hi all,

I am trying to locate Martha Long's baptism, she was born between 1809-1814 in Easton but as far as I can see she was not baptised there. I did find a John Long in 1807 but not Martha.

Martha married in 1834 in Letheringham so I checked there and she wasn't here either.

I have located her all on the census (1841-1891).
Bloomfield, Knights, Whitmore, Warner (Suffolk)
Hamlin (London, Yorkshire, Scotland, Suffolk)
Mattocks, Newick, Nutter, (Kent)
Mattocks (Staffs)

Sadly I don't think that is her. When she married in  1834 in Letheringham her husband was a George Smith Mulley. I also believe that she was married previously to someone with the Hurren surname (possibly Robert) in Easton.

Thanks for the info though, that middle name of Smith is intriguing though.

Very strange

There are only 3 Martha Long entries on the Suffolk Marriage Index (1813-1837).  One is the one I have quoted & 2 in Boyton/Capel St Andrew.  Also near Woodbridge.

Martha LONG (wd) m Thomas Richardson 12 Jun 1820
Martha LONG m John MALLETT 25 May 1828

I have looked for Martha HURREN & yes she appears marrying George MULLEY 24 Jan 1834  there is no suggestion that she is a widow on the Index.

Perhaps she married a Mr HURREN outside of Suffolk.

Or perhaps she was actually born as a HURREN and not a LONG. My information of the LONG name came from somebody in Australia who had researched part of this tree, it is looking like she got this bit wrong.

Thanks again Keziah2, food for thought here, time to do some more research I think....

Strangely enough Alan the Suffolk Burial Index notes the following:

Robert HURREN buried 18 Dec 1831 age 22 - Easton, All Saints.  Unfortunately there is no additional info as to his marital status etc.

There are also a number of LONG burials in the same parish.  I suppose they may have married somewhere other than the parish church & when she remarried it wasn't noted that she was a widow.

ps.  Use of the mothers maiden name as part of the Chrisitan names (Martha Smith Long) is quite common here in Suffolk around that time.

I saw that burial and my thinking was that he could have been Martha's first husband. But what confuses me somewhat is that there are both LONG's and HURREN's burred at Easton.

You are right about the maiden name being used as a middle name as I have quite a few example of this, Martha's husband George had the middle name Smith for example and a lot of his ancestors also took the Smith name.
