Victoria Avenue, Garlinge
« on: Saturday 12 February 11 15:30 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to identify a house on Victoria Avenue.  It is called 'Strathmore' in 1916 on a birth certificate but I cannot locate which house this  might be.  There was one called Strathmore in Leslie Avenue in the 1920's (street directory) nearer to Garlinge but doubt if a mistake could have been made over the address but it is a possibility as the house was rented at the time by the grandparents and they moved shortly afterwards.

Any ideas?

A 1913 directory lists an address of "Morlands", Victoria Avenue, Garlinge, Westgate on Sea so it looks like Victoria Avenue (near to Quex Road?) was classed as Garlinge.

One of the easiest ways to pinpoint an exact address/property is to go through all the surviving street directories (Margate Library perhaps?) and list who was living where and when ............ they are usually in chronological order ie. High Street numbers 1-13 (here is Thanet Road) High Street 15-21 etc. etc. especially when the houses are named rather than numbered.

Thanks for that...  yes the Westgate one would be the likely one ( there is another over Cliftonville way).

I do not get to Kent anymore so just accessed the online directories for 1920's and that gave me 'Strathmore' but in Leslie Avenue.  Perhaps someone moved and took the house name with them? It is just house numbers now in both streets I believe so cannot identify the one in Leslie Avenue either.

Not to worry - thought it might ring a bell with someone!

According to the old hand written paper deeds.Victoria Avenue Garlinge was re named to become Leslie avenue around 1914 when the land was sold to builder H Goodban.

I've been looking for early photographs of the houses in Leslie ave but have only found ones in nearby Ellington and Birds avenue.

Well that is very interesting and thank you for contributing to this old query.

My grandmother came down to Garlinge to give birth in July 1916 but returned to London and registered the birth there as her husband was about to depart   for war.  It puzzled me how she could have made such a mistake.  Her parents rented the  house in Leslie Avenue for about 2 years before buying a new house nearby.

Someone on another forum has checked directories for me and identified the house with the name 'Strathmore' as being no 11 Leslie Avenue.  Perhaps the name was known by the locals as Victoria Avenue  for some time after it was officially changed.  I wonder what reason for the change?  The name of the builder's son perhaps?

Thanks for screenshot.  :)

So were these houses built c 1914 when builder purchased land?  I see there is a Leslie Goodban born in area c 1901.  My mother recalls the name being written on the glass panel over the door.
