Kirkheaton parish
« on: Saturday 19 February 11 13:37 GMT (UK) »
I am looking for early Kirkheaton  parish records.  I am interested in the Graham family.   I have got back to a Joseph who must of been born c 1645  and a John around 1640.   I have found several children baptised to both of them in Kirkheaton  at St John  the baptist.

Are there records out there? If so how do I access them?

Thanks Wendy.

Hi

Sorry to say that most of the early records for Kirkheaton have been lost and they only start from 1653.
You could try the kirkheatononlineparish website.

The YAS at Leeds have the bishops transcripts but the coverage is very sketchy for that period due to the civil war.

I had an ancestor who's baptism was probably in one of the missing years but luckily his family were mentioned in several deeds, the manor court rolls and left wills which enabled me to piece together enough to get back several generations earlier.

See also http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,471096.0.html for Kirkheaton resources.

Hi Stu, Firstly thanks for your reply  and also for your suggestions.
I will have to study  everything on the link.

Could you tell me how to see the deeds  and court rolls etc.  Is it in anyway possible to get any of this information online as I live in the South of England?

Thanks again Wendy.

I'm sorry to say that I don't know of any other way to access the Kirkheaton deeds and court rolls other than to visit the archive at Huddersfield.

I can't find any 17th century mentions of the Grahams in Kirkheaton, do you know which part of Kirkheaton they lived in?
There was quite a bit of movement around the civil war period so it is possible that they came from another parish. My Kirkheaton families seemed to move around the surrounding parishes over the years.

Would the records be kept at Huddersfield Libray?

I have found some early Graham family in Dewsbury but don't know if they are connected yet .
Thanks for the information
Wendy.

Kirklees Archive is in the local history library at the Huddersfield library http://www.archives.wyjs.org.uk/wyjs-archives-kirklees.asp, that is where I saw the records.
