W G Helsby - Photographer
« on: Friday 04 March 11 13:17 GMT (UK) »
I have 2 cabinet cards I am trying to date.  For both, the background is plain dark green.  The front border is also dark green with a gold chamfered edge.  The name and logo on the bottom is different on  each photo and I attach an image of both.  I think William G Helsby operated from around 1880 and his son (W.G Junior) operated from around 1907 to 1928.  Based on the logo style does anyone have photos that match for which they know the dates with certainty?

W G Helsby (snr) born Buenos Ayres Argentina 1828, was a photographer in Valaparaiso Chile for many years. He died in St Asaph Wales 1891. His son also Dr William George was born in Valparaiso Chile in 1853 and was also a photographer, eventually living in Denbigh with his father, WG jnr died in 1925.
The Helsby photographers had a studio in Valparaiso "Helsby" corner - a sketch of can be found on the Internet. Google Helsby photographers for more details.
The brothers,William, John, and Thomas Helsby, operated
a photographic studio in Valparaiso beginning in 1846.Carlos
Luis Rossell joined the studio in the late 1850s and bought the
business in 1866. John Helsby traveled to the Juan Fernandez
Islands aboard the yacht of Jose Tomas Urgenta and produced
photographs there around 1860.Almost certainly he is the
maker of these images of the Juan Fernanadez Islands.

Hope this is of help.

Hi Rod :)

The cards look like 1890s designs to me...if we could see the photos too we would have more of a chance of dating them accurately.

Cheers
Prue

Hello,

While not connected to WG Helsby, I am tearing my hair out trying to find the ancestors of a woman named Mary Helsby. Mary was born around 1790 and married James Cornwall in 1813, but I have not been able to trace her line back - that is to say - where she fits in the great Norman Pedigree!
Unfortunately, I have wasted time searching the wrong Mary and find myself a bit stuck! Is there anyone out there who can help?

Thanks in anticipation,

Mary Helsby was born in 1798 and was my 3rd great grand aunt. She married James Cornwall on 7th July 1813 and had 7 children. She died in January 1866 and James died on 23 Nov 1870.
