William Morris in Widnes since c.1885, mother is Mary Morris. William was born in Buerton/Audlem c.1857.
Census pre-1881 in Buerton has family written as Morrey. Which is correct?
Looking for baptism of William Morris/Morrey.
Could anybody help, please?

Having problems locating any information re William Morris/Morrey.

1891 census - there is no William Morris, b 1857 Cheshire, living in Widnes.
1891 census - there are just 4 such gentlemen. None of them born in Audley or Buerton.

1888 census.

Hello hoople,

It looks to me as if the birth of William has been registered as Morrey.

Buerton was in Nantwich Registration District in 1857.

There is no sign of a birth registered at that time in Nantwich RD for a William Morris. There are births registered there for William Morrey however.

Quarter to September 1856

William Morrey Nantwich RD Volume 8a Page 295

Quarter to September 1857

William Morrey Nantwich RD Volume 8a Page 291.

Quarter to December 1858.

I am including the link to Genuki on Buerton which may be helpful to you.

Hi, Hoople, the most likely parish for a baptism is Audlem.  This register for the period you state for William is online at the following link
http://www.csc.liv.ac.uk/~cprdb/
Morrey appears to be a common name in the Buerton/Audlem area.  There are a few Morris on the register as well.
Do have a look.  There is no obvious William Morrey or Morris on this register for circa 1857.  He could have been baptised elsewhere.
As Jo Harding has shown there are registrations in the Nantwich area for William Morris and he may appear on the Nantwich transcriptions on this site.
Regards
Kathb

Hi - just beginning my Morris branch and also have William Morris of Buerton. Struggled also to find any more, but just had DNA results which identifies 3rd cousins with surname Morrey. Could be the families intermarried so I am researching that right now. Could also be, as suggested, that the census taker misspelled Morrey as Morris.

I have a marriage certificate for Frederick Morris, m Ann Southern in Widnes, 1922. His father is William Morris (deceased), a skilled labourer. Frederick lives in Eleanor Street, Widnes. In the 1891 Census Frederick is living in his brother William (Jnr’s) household in Widnes. Their mother Mary, a widow, lives with them. Mary, Frederick and head of household William all give their birthplace as Audlem. I have hesitated to develop the Morray suggestion because I think it more likely that the census taker would make an error with Murray than Morris if it is a simple spelling error. For this reason I believe the family changed their name deliberately when they left Buerton and moved to Widnes.
