Elizabeth TUTTON, born Dundry 1790
« on: Friday 25 March 11 13:54 GMT (UK) »
Hi
Elizabeth Tutton was born in Dundry, 1790. The parish register only seems to list a mother, also Elizabeth Tutton. I assume she wasn't married, therefore. I can't find the older Elizabeth's birth or a subsequent marriage. [I know Elizabeth the younger married a Thomas Cox, from Whitchurch,  at St. James, Bristol 1813.] Any suggestions as to where to look for information on the older Elizabeth would be great, thankyou.

Hello bossyrozzy,

Freereg has one baptism for a Tutton in Dundry but this is Ann Tutton baptised in 1760/1 and daughter of Robert and Mary Tutton.

You may find a further search of Freereg to be useful.

Hi, Jo
Thanks for that but I've already tried Freereg. Wondering if there are some weird variations in spelling of Tutton possible. Thankyou anyway

Hello again,

Yes, I am certain there would be many name variants of Tutton.

Freereg comes up with another two baptisms for TUTON in Dundry. Bety Tuton in 1760, daughter of Samuel and Bety Tuton. Reuben in 1764, son of Robart and Mary Tuton.

I note there is a burial of Samuel TUTTIN in Dundry in 1791.

Have you tried to see if there is a local group for Dundry which might have access to more information? I looked to see if there is an Online Parish Clerk for this area but it appears there is not.

Jo.

Elizabeth Tutton's mother, also Elizabeth Tutton was transported to New South Wales for 7 years having been found guilty of larceny at the Somerset Quarter Sessions. She sailed on the Canada with 121 other female convicts in 1810. She stayed on after serving her sentence and eventually married and remained in Australia.

Hi, Jon
I am fascinated by your reply. May I ask how you know about Elizabeth's deportation, please and if you are sure she is the right one? Also, do you know how old she was at deportation? She would be my first ancestor that I know of who was deported. Thank you so much for your reply.

Hi, Jon
I've done some checking up and the Elizabeth TUTTON who was deported was only born in 1792, so she was actually younger than mine or at least roughly the same age. Shame really as I quite liked the idea of an ancestor who was deported to Australia. Thank you for your efforts

Hi

While nothing in Family History is set in stone, I wouldn't be so quick to discount her.

Just a thought but as she had already lied about not having a child, what makes you think she wouldn't lie about her age? And I think 2 years is not something I would personally rely on to discard a potential candidate.

The daughter, Elizabeth Tutton is my direct ancestor.

The sources were from the Australian Archives.

We probably share quite a few ancestors I would have thought.
