REED Crathorne Hall
« on: Sunday 27 March 11 16:36 BST (UK) »
I am trying to track down my husbands grandfather- Ernest Alfred Reed b. 1893, Norton.
I have him in the 1891 census with his family, at Scarborough Road, Norton, N. Yorks.
The family was split up after his father died, about 1911, but though I have found his brothers and sisters living with older members of the family, I can find no trace of Ernest until he joins the army at the start of WW1
Before WW1 he is said by family to have been a servant, possibly at Crathorne Hall, near Yarm.
His parents were Henry and Catherine.
Many thanks, Maggie.

Hi Maggie,

He is listed on the 1911 free index as Ernest Alfred Read, born 1894 in Norton

Kind regards,

Many thanks Pels,

I have found Ernest in 1911- as one of 17 servants at Swinton Grange, Malton.
Does anyone know if this large house still exists, or anything of it's history- the head of the household is Clive Behrens.

Maggie

Hi again,

If you Google the address - it is still there. Here's the image from Google Maps.

Swinton Grange
Clive Behrens married Evelina, the eldest daughter of Lord Rothschild. Swinton Grange was built as a present for the newlyweds together with housing for the outdoor servants in Laundry Lane. The house was finished in 1905 so your ancestor would have been working in a magnificent Edwardian mansion. I have the building photographs from that time including pictures of the interior where your ancestor may have worked. The grounds were created by Lord Rothschild's gardeners from Tring and contain a now mature example of every tree known to grow in England. They are the subject of a blanket TPO which I obtained in 2000. My company purchased the Grange from Clive Behrens' son, Colonel "Billy" Behrens and maintained it in its original splendour, albeit smaller than when built, having been re-modelled in the 1960s for the lesser needs of Colonel Behrens and his wife Dulcie. The Colonel died in the 1980s but his widow still lives in the area and there are some old retainers around there too. When we sold our company the new owners sold Swinton Grange. It is now occupied by a company and the Scarborough Primary Health Care Trust. The former stables and granary which we converted for office use are still in such use and the kitchen garden is now the site of a stylish office development.

Maggie,
I should have added I have a photo taken in 1905 of the hall of the Grange where your ancestor worked as a hall boy. Just unable to find it at the moment!

Ernest Reed in 1901 was at  16 Mill Street Norton age 7. His father came from Stonegrave. But you probably know this already.

Many thanks Inchcape Yorkshire for the wonderful information. I am scrapbooking the family history and the pictures will be a great help! I have a picture of Ernest in his domestic uniform, stood next to a grand looking gentleman- I wonder if this could be Clive Behrens? I will see if I can find a picture online.
