Huntingdonshire life?
« on: Thursday 31 March 11 08:32 BST (UK) »
I need to learn more about  Huntingdonshire in the early to mid 1800s.
I have ancestors from that area and I want to learn about what the town and surroundings were like in that time?
I am interested in churches and cemeteries in that time
Any advice on some good sites or books?
Thank you
Jenny from Townsville

You could join the Huntingdonshire Family History Society

http://www.huntsfhs.org.uk/

or at the very least have a look at the bookstall on their site which has some good books on Huntingdonshire in the past
James Stott c1775-1850. James was born in Yorkshire but where? He was a stonemason and married Elizabeth Archer (nee Nicholson) in 1794 at Ripon. They lived thereafter in Masham. If anyone has any suggestions or leads as to his birthplace I would be interested to know. I have searched for it for years without success. Thank you.

You might like to read "Huntingdon - Eight Centuries of History" by Alan Akeroyd and Caroline Clifford, ISBN 1 85983 402 7, written by the county archivists.  Although it concentrates on the town itself, it has very good illustrations and does cover the county as well.  There are new and second-hand copies on the usual internet booksellers' sites. The Hunts FHS price is a bit steep!  I found mine much reduced in a "remainders" bookshop.
