Mattinsons of Crosby Ravensworth and Dufton
« on: Friday 29 April 11 16:53 BST (UK) »
Hi
I am trying to find out more about my 4* gt gd mother Elizabeth Mattinson born I think in Dufton in 1770. I know she marries William Ellwood and he dies before my 3*gt gd father William is born in 1795 because according to the records he is baptised
ELWOOD Wm s of late Wm of Low Whitber and Eliz hw late Mattison bapt1795Mar15

Elizabeth marries Henry Wilkinson in 1801 and they go on to have at least five children that I have found out about.

Then in 1834 the family move to Ohio Elizabeth is in her 60's quite a feat. I would love to know why they went there.

Can anyone tell me more about the Ellwood and mattinson family and about Crosby Ravensworth Low Row and Low Whitbar am I asking too much any thing would be fantastic
thanks
Helene

Hi Helene,

I was interested in your post as I am researching Ellwoods originally from Dufton. One branch farmed at Blasterfield in Crosby Ravensworth. I know of your Ellwood family of Low Whitbar in Maulds Meaburn. Do you know where William Ellwood your 4x gt grandad came from? Interesting that Eliz Mattinson came from Dufton.

I have a file on most Ellwood families & will look through them to see if I can add anything.

Gillian

Hi
Thanks for the offer. I only know about William through the Ronald grigg/Genuki Crosby Ravensworth parish records.

I beleive that Elizabeth Mattinson's parents are John and Ruth and she was born in Dufton in 1770

regards
Helene

Hi Helene,

Yes I too have consulted that site. I saw their marriage (1792 CR) & that William Ellwood was from Morland. However, there is no corresponding birth from there. The marriage had no witnesses noted in the parish records either.

There is a baptism of William 5th May 1774 at St Micheal's Appleby son of John & Mary of Felldikes. That would make him approx 18 yrs old in 1792. I think Felldikes is in Hilton.

Thanks
Helene

Hi Helene,

I cannot find any connection with Dufton directly.

William b1774 son of John Ellwood & Mary Nanson is the nearest unaccounted for Ellwood that I can locate. John Ellwood a weaver (see 1787 census Brampton) was the son of William Ellwood & Mary Hall. This William came from Dufton & was the brother of Mark Ellwood my ? x gt grandfather b1734 Dufton.

This link is pure speculation using the internet & best guesses!

Gillian

Hi again,

I have had another look at this family.

John Elwood & Mary Nason:
were living in Hilton 1777 (window tax), 1774-1782 (baptism of children John, William & Mary)
were living in Brampton 1787 (1787 Westmorland census).

In Crosby Ravensworth a John & Mary Elwood were living Trainlands:
son William (of Morland) marr Eliz Mattinson 1792??
Dau Margaret bur 1803 aged 27
Mary Elwood wife of John bur 1805 aged 64
Son John marr Mary Ruddock CR 1806??
John of Trainlands bur 1811 aged 63.
William of Trainlands/Eaumont bridge bur 1827 aged 54 - not your William!!??

The more I look at it the less sure I am about how the families fit! Your William doesn't seem to fit in that nicely into this family pattern. He seems too young.

Regards,

Gillian

Hi
Thanks for looking into the family for me I must admit I don't have anything definite for William except for the marriage to Elizabeth Mattinson. Which gives Morland as his abode.

Could Joseph be the name of his father as that is the name of the first son b1793, I know families do tend to use the same names. Is there a William son of Joseph. I don't know where I got the birth of Joseph from it must have been when I started researching the family.
According to the 1777 window tax there is a Joh Ellwood living at Dufton and according to the index there is supposed to be a Joseph in area 3 but no matter how I look I can't see one there.

According to the 1787 constables transcripts there is a Joshua at Maulds Meaburn and a William at Sockbridge.

The 1829 Cumberland Westmorland gazette has various Ellwoods at Dufton Mark at Kirkby Stephen and Thomas at Crosby Ravensworth.

None of this moves me forward which is a shame.

Where what is Trainlands it's a good name

Would love to know more
thanks once more
Helene

Hi Helen,

I think I was off on the wrong track with the Trainlands Ellwoods. Trainlands is in Maulds Meaburn.

Yes there is another family:

Joshua Ellwood marr Mary Lunson 14 May 1758 Newton Reigny CUM
Isabel dau bap 24/4/1760 Kirkland CUM
Mary bap 2/12/1762 Kirkland CUM buried 14 May 1774 CR living Whitbar
Anne bap 24/1/1765 Kirkland Cum
Margaret bap 2/1/1767 CR living Whitbar
William bap 15/6/1769 CR living Whitbar *
Joshua bur 1/7/1791 of Morland
Mary widow of Whitbar bur 24/5/1777 CR ?????
Mary wife of Joshua of Whitbar bur 7/5/1785 CR.

I cannot find where Joshua originated from. Mary Lunson was baptised in Kirkland Cum 23/3/1723 dau of John.

Gillian

*William Elwood marr Elizabeth Mattinson 6 May 1792 CR - no burial found
