Prout Martletwy
« on: Saturday 07 May 11 17:06 BST (UK) »
I am trying to find the birthplace of William Prout 1753-1822. He was buried in Martletwy but I dont know where he was born. His first wife was Mary and his second was Martha who died in 1842. The parish records for Martletwy are incomplete so where do I go from here? Please can anyone help?

I couldn't find a any mrge reference to the Prout surname during the 18th century at Martletwy, but I do know it is a common family down around St Issells area, so had a look there and found ;

William Prout to a Mary David in 1785 at St Issells.

And while its just not early enough to fit ;
Stephen Prout mrd Hannah Oriel 17 Sep 1768 at Amroth, but had been resident at St Issells when his will was probated 07 Mar 1787.

I wonder if the John Prout buried at Martletwy in 1816 is perhaps a brother to William.

The Prout family do seem to flourish at Martletwy in the early 19th century.

From my database of the Burgess of Pembroke Borough 1678 to 2006 I note

David Prout a labourer of Yerbeston was made burgess 13 Jan 1795 Admin Bk 5 Page 50 Minute Book page 139
John Prout a Collier was made burgess 20 Jan 1766 Admin Bk 4 Page 14 Minute Bk page 12

William Prout mentioned previous was a Collier of White Park St Issell’s made his will 14 June 1825 and probated in 1827 reference nbr is 1827-056.
The lightly hood is that this William Prout was also a witness to the will of James Callan who made his will on the 14 May 1812 another Collier living on St Issells Common.

My thanks to Sylvia and Orielbenfro regarding William Prout of Martletwy. I know of the Prouts of St. Issells but cannot make any definite connection with Martletwy.

Interestingly, I have read the story of Mary Prout b.1843, of Foxenholes who killed her baby daughter Rhoda Margaret b. 1864. My great grandparents William and Mary(Minnie) Prout of Burton also named two of their daughters who died in infancy, Rhoda Margaret, so maybe there could be a family connection somewhere.

For your interest whilst researching unrelated subject, have come across the following ;
Baptism at Burton
Rhoda Margaret Prout bapt 1884 was born in 1884
Rhoda Margaret Prout bapt 1889 was born in 1889

I was amazed by just how many of that family name are there and how far they go back, so there you go I've learnt something new again so today isn't wasted.

The only burial of a Mary Prout that I can find at all to fit your requirements is the burial of Mary Proutt(sic) in 1837 at St Issells

Thank you for taking the trouble to pass on the information on the 2 Rhoda Margarets the daughters on William and Mary Elizabeth(Minnie) Prout, they were sisters to my grandmother Harriet. I have no idea where that name came from, but in some previous research I did some time ago I discovered that a William Prout b.1828 in Pembrokeshire married a Rhoda Parfett from Breconshire. They emigrated to the US and he worked in coal mines in Pennsylvania. He became very successful in the coal mining industry but was killed by a falling rock in 1875.
I shall continue my research and hopefully one day will find the vital missing link.

Thank you once again

I search 1813 to 1825 at Martletwy for any reference to the William and Mary or Martha Prout having children baptised in the Parish. There is absolutely no reference to this couple. The baptisms shown in the parish at this time all relate to children of John & Sarah Prout.
See attached for the banns & mrge of Wm and Mary at St Issells for your interest.

I am just beginning my research on Stephen Prout of Pembrokeshire.  I believe he was born around 1730 and it has been suggested he married Hannah Oriel.  I am told his will is in the National Library of Wales 14 Dec 1786.  I have eight children but that is only unsourced information.  Any help would be wonderful.
