Thank you for that Shane.  ;D

I think the second word is Killarney (bad K) as the officer has written double "L" elsewhere with different sized letters.  Hopefully someone might recognise a place from the phonetic sound around the Killarney area.

All suggestions gratefully received.   :)

There are lots of place in Killarney Poor Law Union, Co. Kerry that start with Caher... but only one in Killarney civil parish is Cahernane.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

for what's worth, my reading of the townland name is Coherciowar - so maybe something that sounds like that ?

I assume that Killarney in this case would either mean the post-town or maybe the civil parish, or poor law union

Agree with your reading but its a puzzle. if you play around with what might be a phonetic spelling of the place  the beginning is possibly Caher but nothing fits the ending. The only two that might come near seem to be Cahersavane and Cahersiveen/Caherciveen but I'm not convinced  either are possible.

it does looks like Caherciveen if you squint - but that's over 60 km away from Killarney..

Maybe a clue would help??

His father (also John) was a ferryman and this John my gt grandfather was a 21 year (at least) man with the Royal Marines.  So I'm thinking near water loch or sea with a ferry??

Killarney is not that close to the sea... about 30km to ether Kilorglan or Kenmare

I think I mentioned Tarbert as a possibility before, but that's 70km to the north of Killarney.

Killarney is beside the lakes - I'm sure there were boats - but would there have been ferries ?
