Rose Dawber - born 1899 - died ?
« on: Friday 03 June 11 21:27 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I am trying to find out what happened to Rose Magdalen Dawber.

She was born Rose Magdalen Mazzie in 1899 in Swindon, Wiltshire, but was brought up in Bristol.

She married in Bristol in 1917 to Jack (John) Sharpe.

Marriages Dec 1917
Mazzie  Rose M  Sharpe  Bristol  6a 412
Sharpe  Jack  Massie  Bristol  6a 412

They had 1 son:-

Births Mar 1919
Sharpe  Frederick W  (Mazzie)  Bristol  6a 50

I don't know what happened to Frederick.

Her husband Jack then died in Bristol in 1919, and has a Commonwealth War Grave, so must have died as a result of the War.

Deaths Mar 1919
Sharpe  John  32  Bristol  6a 80

In Memory of
Gunner J SHARPE
30022, Royal Garrison Artillery
transf. to (533051) , Labour Corps
who died age 31
on 17 February 1919
Son of the late Alfred William Sharpe; husband of Rose Dawber (formerly Sharpe), of 25, Tancred's Close, St. Michael's, Bristol.
Remembered with honour
BRISTOL (ARNOS VALE) CEMETERY

Rose then had another son in 1921, which is listed as Sharpe on his birth record, but was born too long after Jack's death to be his:-

Births Sep 1921
Sharpe  George  Mazzie  Bristol  6a 103

However, on his death record he is listed as Dawber:-

Deaths Dec 1922
Dawber  George  1  Bristol  6a 25

Rose had married secondly, George T W Dawber:-

Marriages Mar 1922
DAWBER  George T W  Sharpe  Bristol  6a 216
SHARPE  Rose M  Dawber  Bristol  6a 216

Rose and George then had a son:-

Births Mar 1923
Dawber  Alfred R  Mazzie  Bristol  6a 385

and a daughter who died young:-

Births Sep 1925
Dawber  Doris G R  Mazzie  Bristol  6a 386

Deaths Dec 1925
Dawber  Doris G R  0  Bristol  6a 34

Alfred R Dawber married in Surrey in 1956.

I can't find any children of his.

He died in 1983 in Surrey.

George T W Dawber, Roses husband died in Wigan, Lancashire in 1953.

I can't find any record of Rose either in the death records or marriage records (assuming she may have divorced George and re-married).

I have looked at a few possibilities of deaths of Rose Dawber's (and variant spellings) but every time I find a death in a particular district, I also find the birth and marriage of the Rose Dawber that the person must have been.

I have also looked at emigration, but can't find anybody to match.

Can anybody help?

Thanks,

Darin.

The 1936 death in Chorley  of Rose DAWBER age 33.
The age is out but not wildly so.

Have you checked this one?

Cheers

Hi,

I purchased George Dawber's death certificate from 1953 in the hope it would yield some clues as to Rose's whereabouts, but she isn't named.

This leads me to believe she may have died before George, or they divorced .

The details on his death cert are:-

Wigan

When and where died: 7th Oct 1953; 75 Frog Lane

Name: George Thomas Wallwork Dawber

Sex: Male

Age: 68 years

Cause of Death: Carcinoma of Liver

Informant: W A Culshaw, niece - in attendance; 242 City road, Kitt Green, Wigan.

Has anybody got any other ideas as to what happened to Rose?

Thanks,

Darin.

Hi

I may have found a strange birth entry that may help (or hinder) my search for Rose Dawber.

As I mentioned she married her 2nd husband George Thomas Wallwork Dawber in Bristol in 1922.

After the birth of their daughter (Doris Grace Rose Dawber) in 1924 Rose disappears.

That daughter died in Bristol in 1925.

There is another birth in Bristol in 1927:

Patricia Dawber (mothers maiden name Burke) - but there is another entry for the same person - Patricia Leigh (mothers maiden name Burke).

This 2nd birth also appears as a late entry in 1928.

Could this be an extra-marital birth by George Dawber?

Or did Rose die after giving birth to Doris in 1924, but her name hasn't made the GRO indexes?

Dawber isn't a name that shows up in Bristol, but is very common in Lancashire where George was from and died.

Can anybody advise if this might be another part of the mystery into Rose Magdalen Dawber's whereabouts after 1924?

Thanks

Darin.

Hi there,

There is an 1945 marriage in Cardiff which might, or might not be relevant. As it's verging on the possibility of the people concerned maybe being still alive I will PM you.

Looby :)

The couple who married in Cardiff in 1945 appear to have been much younger - born 1920s - and to have settled in the US where the bridegroom was from.  A public tree shows them as now both having died in the US.
