Watkins of Brecon
« on: Saturday 11 June 11 19:44 BST (UK) »
Hi, I am looking for help/advice on how to discover where my great great grandmother, Sarah Watkins, was born. She married John Dawson sometime between 1847 and 1851. Sarah is last mentioned in the 1901 census at Leamington: Sarah Dawson Widow, age 72. Born Wales, Brecon.

Any help would gratefully received.

do you have a copy of the marriage certificate to give father's name & occupation which would help to identify a baptism?

Hello Osprey,

Many thanks for your comment. Sara Watkins married John Dawson at Leamington June 29th, 1846. her father's name was Walter Watkins occupation Painter. Sarah's age on the marriage certificate is given as a minor, her age in the 1901 census was 72 so I estimate her birth was in 1829.

Once again many thanks for your help.

I suspect Punter St could be an error in transcription as Sarah's address at her marriage is Pointers St, Leamington Priors? A Walter age 20 moved to Sheffield with the family. Sarah's age in 1841 (12) confirms her birth as 1829 as does the 1901 census. By the time of the 1851 census Sarah is married and at Sheffield. Could it be that Walter Watkins age 50 should read printer and not plumber?

Everything points to them being the right family except for the Punter St/Pointer St and Plumber/Painter. The death of Walter Watkins in 1842 would explain the difficulty of finding the family in the 1851 census, but Sarah's father is not listed as deceased on her marriage certificate in 1846! this is what makes family history so much fun/frustrating.

Many thanks for all you help, it really is appreciated. I'll keep you informed.

Joe

That was my transcription, and it looks more like Punter as the enumerator didn't dot his i, but he didn't cross his t either. I've checked the description of the enumeration district and it looks more like Pointer there. The occupation of Walter senior is definitely plumber.

There's no reason for him to be recorded as deceased on Sarah's marriage cert. The question didn't have to be asked or the answer recorded.
