Hi Jonn

Is there another 1851 entry for a McVicar family (apart from that household in New Monkland)? It's the only one I could see for 1851 with a Margaret there and 1861 is also still a problem for the rest of the McVicars in the family  :-\

I had this info below on a notepad from earlier searches this afternoon.

These are just guesses from info I have found and would need to be confirmed (most likely on Scotlands People). Greg, you had a possible entry for Margaret in 1861 working in a farm where a Gilbert Templeton also showed as working at.

There was then a gap leading to a potential family in 1881 with a Margaret who could fit as young William's mother.

These are the guesses:

There is a marriage for a John SCOTT and Margaret MCVICAR on 20 Feb. 1863 High Church, Glasgow. Two children from this marriage:
1. Robert SCOTT born 24 Jan. 1864 Kilmarnock, Ayr
2. John SCOTT born 15 Feb. 1866 Bridgeton, Glasgow, Lanark

The reason I worked back to this family is this Welsh 1871 entry. Everyone born in Scotland except for the domestic servant, Eliza:

1871:
James McVicar 24, draper
Margaret Scott 29, sister, widowed
Robert Scott 7, nephew
John Scott 5, nephew
John Laurie 22, draper
Eliza Thomas 15, servant
RG10; Piece: 5466; Folio: 69; Page: 16; Llanelly , Carmarthenshire

John Laurie and Margaret (indexed as Margrat) Scott married 4th Qrt 1872 in Llanelly Carmarthenshire. Unlike in Scotland, in England and Wales, widows remarry under their prior married name.

Daughters’ births:
Helen Elizabeth Laurie born 2nd Qrt 1873 in Carmarthen/ Carmarthenshire, Dyfed, Pembrokeshire
Jessie Laurie born 4th Qrt 1875 in Carmarthen/ Carmarthenshire

We then had the Laurie family back in Scotland from 1881:

John Laurie 32
Margaret Laurie 38
Ellen E Laurie 7
Jessie Laurie 5
Address: 30 Princes St., Govan, Lanarkshire

Laurie family then show in Clydebank for 1891 and 1901.

Would be good to find the McVicar family in 1861. We have a potential brother called James and the 1861 census would help in this respect to confirm the names of possible siblings for Margaret.

Hello Monica,

The Family were in Kilmarnock, 1841. 1851. 1861. its most likely they died in Ayr. ie the parents.

Young Margaret is with her parents 1851. aged 9 years, it seems she is the eldest child.

The parents ages are a bit dodgy if you compare the three census, it is however them.

The Margaret, that Paddles, found 1861. living beside Gilbert Templeton, in Graigie, born Kilmarnock, is i would say is her Margaret Mcvicar, there are not many McVicars, in the whole of Ayrshire, 1851. or 1861. and her son William McVicar, was born 19/Feb/1862, Graigie, Kilmarnock, to mother Margaret McVicar, no father.

Regards,
Jonn.

Well done Jonn, that certainly will help Greg  :)

Just seen the 1851 entry now for the McVicar family on FreeCen as you said Jonn (hurray for FreeCen  :D).

Greg, you can see the 1851 entry for the McVicars here http://freecen.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl

Click on the right census year at the top and for 1851 use Jonn's info as he has detailed.

Hello All,

I did a wee bit of checking, in 1851. the whole family are there although i only have the index.

McVicar Alexander, age 42 years, Kilmarnock, born Renfrewshire,
McVicar Janet, age 32 years, Kilmarnock, born Kilmarnock,
McVicar Margaret, Age 9 years, Kilmarnock, born Kilmarnock,
McVicar John, age 7 years, Kilmarnock, born Kilmarnock,
McVicar James, age 4 years, Kilmarnock, born Kilmarnock,
McVicar Eliza, age 2 years, Kilmarnock, born Kilmarnock.

Also living almost next door i think the father of Janet Walker, called Gavin Walker.

My reason by 1861 Alexander McVicar, and Janet Walker, have a son Gavin McVicar, a little more research needed.

By the way Monica, that was a good find Margarets, first marriage.

Regards,
Jonn.

Ahhh....you mention Gavin as a possible family name! I found this down in Wales for 1881, also in Llanelly:

Gavin McVicar 25, draper b. Scotland
Mary E. McVicar 22 wife b. Llanelly
Address: Stepney Place, Llanelly, Carmarthenshire
RG11; Piece: 5374; Folio: 161; Page: 25

Given the location and the rareness of a McVicar in Wales, did wonder if he was part of the family!

Greg, the 1881 English and Welsh census is available as an index here www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp?PAGE=census/search_census.asp

Hello Monica,

Yep in 1861, Gavin McVicar, is aged 7 years. so you could be bang on.

It looks like the family moved about quite a bit, there only seems at this moment that a son John McVicar, is left in Ayrshire, by 1881.

It is most certainly looking like the family of Walkers, living next door to the McVicars, is Janet Walker McVicars, ie Father Gavin, the mother Margaret, is however to young to be Janet's mum, however there is this data Janet Walker, born 18/April/1819. Kilmarnock, Ayr, to parents Gavin Walker, and Margaret Boyd, who were married 06/June/1808. Kilmarnock, Ayr.

Alas the Margaret Walker, on the 1851 census at age 39 years. is to young. it looks like Gavin Walker, Senior, has been married twice.

More research needed.

Regards,
Jonn.
