Unknown placename.
« on: Friday 24 June 11 20:18 BST (UK) »
Hi,
In the 1851 census (RG  H0107  Piece 1980  Folio 307 Page  10) my 3 x Great Grandfather, Isac Hall (b 1873) put Strilary,Shropshire as his place of birth.
Now,I've never heard of this place, so does it exist or is it an old name for a current town/village or did it get lost in translation between Isac and the census taker?
Any thoughts and/or help would be great.
       Thanks,
            Johnee.

How about

Stanton Lacy

I know that its hard to make that from the census but the last lour letters look like lery, lary or lacy and Stanton Lacy is the only one that fits that - and there is an Isaac Hall baptised there in 1774
James Stott c1775-1850. James was born in Yorkshire but where? He was a stonemason and married Elizabeth Archer (nee Nicholson) in 1794 at Ripon. They lived thereafter in Masham. If anyone has any suggestions or leads as to his birthplace I would be interested to know. I have searched for it for years without success. Thank you.

Have you checked where they were in the census either side of this one? May be more legible???

Hi Sue,
Yes I've tried those.Unfortunately he died in 1858 and in the 1841 returns he gave no place of birth.
      Thanks anyway,
                    Johnee.
