Hi,
I'm trying to find a marriage between James Dotchin and Elizabeth Beatrice Miles 18th July 1896, just need reference so I can order certificate.
I have got this information from their first son's  birth record, he was born in Hamilton Lanark the entry is very clear,

Any help or advise would be much appreciated

Many thanks

SO either

a) There was a marriage as you have the details for, but for some reason it has not made its way into the GRO indexes. You could check this out by searching the PArish registers for Skelton (assuming it was supposed to be at the Parish Church)

b) There was no marriage at all, they just put this on the form when registering the child's birth rather than admit they werent married

c) They did marry, but some other place and time, and for some reason the detials they gave were wrong. But I couldnt see a marriage around that time in theindexes, though I didnt look for long.
Free to search on FreeBMD (England and Wales) but of course they may have married in Scotland

Any further clues from any siblings births? I am not familiar with Scottish certs.

In my father in law's tree there is scottish birth cert with the date of a wedding in Leeds in 1872, there is no record of this either.

They were obviously not married and just put it to look as if they were because she didn't get her divorce from her first husband until 1873!

Hi,
Thankyou both for your replies.
They seem to be living in different places by 1901 James is in Scotland, a  boarder  and working as a Coal Miner Hewer and Elizabeth is with their son in Loftus Yorkshire, so seems as though James was away working, he is with Elizabeth's brother James Myles...... but I can't find either James or Elizabeth or their son on 1911 census and I don't no if they had any other children, or wether they are in England or Scotland.
Thought I would try to find James birth record, 1901 Scottish census says birth  abt 1874 England, 1891 census there is a James Dotchin birth abt 1873 he is an Adopted son born Chester le Street Durham, and I have found another record of a baptism on 15 March 1874 Eighton Banks Durham mothers name Sarah Dotchin, so think I will need to get that record verified, as this may well be my James.
Will first have to see if Eighton Banks is any where near Chester Le Street  as I don't no the area at all.

Anyway many thanks for your help and thoughts

Regards

Eighton Banks is right on the southern tip of Gateshead and not too far from Chester-le Street.

Are you aware that there are 3 Skeltons in North Yorkshire?

(1) 3 miles north of York on the A19
(2) approx 2 miles south of Saltburn on the A173
(3) approx 3 miles west of Richmond

When it says Skelton, York on the certificate, York could well be an abbreviation for Yorkshire just like it is in the LDS indexes.....

FreeBMD has these James Dotchin's born around 1870-1880 all in the North East.......

Dec 1872 James Laing Dotchin Tynemouth 10b  214
Mar 1874 James Gordon Dotchin Gateshead 10a  918
Sep 1875 James Dotchin Tynemouth 10b  210
Mar 1876 james Dotchin Chester le Street 10a  604

Dotchin must be a local North East name because searching in births in FreeBMD and every single one is from that area!

Hi Bunnygirl my Gt Grandad was James Gordon Dotchin parents Sarah Dotchin and James Gordon, he was born in the workhouse in Chester le street in 1874, he had a brother John and another Edward who died as a baby. James did marry but not in England as it says on my grandad Dempster James Dotchin's birth certificate but just before his brother John was born when Dempster AKA James or Jimmy was 2yrs they married in Glasgow they would have lied to cover up illegitemacy,  2yrs later he married again in same register office in Glasgow to his second wife by whom he had a daughter Sarah. James Gordon dotchin died in March Cambs in the early 1950's
