Old Castle Mine Disaster Llanelli
« on: Thursday 07 July 11 02:38 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I am still searching for the death of David Thomas and hope someone may be able to answer this question.

On the 3rd July 1862 at the Old Castle mine in Llanelli six miners were killed including one David Thomas. Would anyone have any information about this accident or the ages of the men who died. I know they were all married men. The David Thomas I am searching for was a miner and lived at Llanedy. He would have been 51 years old in 1862.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Pauline

Hello Pauline

Have you seen the info on the Welsh coal mines site?

http://www.welshcoalmines.co.uk/Photo.htm

Select Carm, Brec & Pem,  then select Castle Llanelli

There is a description of the disaster.

I have checked the deaths at Llanelli for 1862 Q3 and the men are listed. There is only 1 death of a David Thomas in that quarter at Llanelli, so you could check with the local Llanelli register office whether this is the man you seek.

Kind Regards
Morgan

Hi Morgan,

Thank you for your help. I have spent all day working on this and now think maybe this David Thomas  who was killed in the mining accident was not the man I am looking for. This family lived at Llanedy which seems quite a distance from Llanelli if he was working there.

Also I have found another David Thomas who was a miner in the 1861 census at Llanelly and had a wife  and family which I cannot find in the 1871 census and wonder if this was the man who was killed.

So once again I give up on this family. Thank you so much for your help. It is much appreciated.

Regards Pauline

Hello Pauline  :)

I believe that your David Thomas lived at Garn Fach in Llanedy Parish, but which is nearer to Tycroes. As you say, this seems quite a way from Llanelly at that time, so your David would be more likely to have worked closer to home. See this article about the village:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tycroes

1861 Garnfach, Llanedy
David Thomas Head age 50 Coalminer  born Swansea
Ann Thomas Wife age 52 born Llandilo
plus children David, Ann, Elizabeth, and Rachel

Hi Morgan,

Thank you once again for your help and the attached site. I am now pretty sure that was not my David Thomas who died at Llanelly in the mining accident. On the 1911 census his son David aged 68 and also a coal miner is still living at Garnfach, Tycroes, Pantyffynnon. So the mine must have been close by.

Having such a common name it is going to be difficult to find the deaths for this family as there are so many to choose from. So I think it is time to give up again.

Thank you once again you have helped me so often and I do appreciate it.

Kind Regards
Pauline

Dear Pauline

1851  Garn Fach, Llanedy        HO107   Piece 2469   Folio 333   Page 12
THOMAS family
David (40) Head - Miner & Collier  born Swansea
Ann (41) Wife                                born Llanedy
with children Mary (11),  David(9),   Sarah(7),  Ann (4),  Elizabeth (1)  - all children born Llanedy

(Morgan gave you the 1861 Census)

1871  Garn Fach, Llanedy   RG10   Piece 5472   Folio 31   Page 10
THOMAS family
David (29)  Head  Single - Coalminer     born Llanedy
Sarah(27)   Sister      Single                   born Llanedy
Elizabeth (21) Sister   Married   Visitor   born Llanedy
Sara Ann EVANS (6 mths) niece  visitor  born Llanedy
NOTE:  If Elizabeth was shown as being a "Thomas" but if as shown she is married, and that she is Sara Ann's mother - Elizabeth should be shown as an Evans.)

1881  Garn Fach Cottage & Land, Llanedy   RG11   Piece 5378   Folio 100   Page 12
THOMAS family
David (38)  Head  Married - Coalminer    born Llanedy
Anne (38) wife   Married                          born Llanedy
William (1) son                                         born Llanedy
Sara Ann (8 mths) daughter                     born Llanedy
Mary (40) Sister  Single                            born Llanedy

There was a  David Thomas who died in Carmarthenshire of the right age.   By that I mean that I looked 5 years either side of 1866,  (as he was present in the 1861 but not on 1871) - there was only one who was showing as being born in 1811 and was 62 at age of death (he died in Sep Qtr 1873) Registered in Carmarthenshire,  Vol 11a   Page 419.

I hope this helps a little.
Regards, Alltcafan  :)

I think my 2nd great grandfather also died in this accident, he was David Phillips, we were searching more about him because we cant find his father anywhere, him and his brother john seem to be illegitimate children which is sad because that would stop my tracks of the male side my fathers ancestry
