Hoddom alternative spelling
« on: Tuesday 19 July 11 08:36 BST (UK) »
Hello All,
Can anyone tell me the alternative spelling of Hoddom/Hoddam in Dumfriesshire, please? I'm particularly interested in the 10th-12th C versions.
I was told that Hodelme & Hodeline were versions, but can't find any info on those.
Cheers,
Bob

Hi Bob

Is this what you were thinking of:

When in 573 A.D.St. Kentigern returned from Wales to the Cumbrian region, ' King Rydderch Hael and his people went forth to meet him, and they encountered each other at a place called Holdelm, now Hoddam. . . . Here he fixed his see for a time ; but afterwards, warned by divine revelation, he transferred it to his own city Glasgow ' (Skene's Celtic Scotland, ii. 191, 1877)

There's also mention of Headholm,  Hodhorn and Hallguards in the old favourite GENUKI:

Thanks Gnu!
That Kentigern ref was the one I most wanted.
Your input greatly appreciated.
