The Whetty
« on: Thursday 21 July 11 16:12 BST (UK) »

Does anyone know if this place was near a canal?

According to a newspaper report, my g.g.grandfather (boatman/timber dealer) was living there in 1869.

Hi Jackie,

There's a Whetty Lane now in Rubery, Rednall, Birmingham.  I think it used to be in Worcestershire.

No canal anywhere near.  So may have different meanings.

Think it could have been in the Bromsgrove area, 2xg.grandfather would probably have been living on a boat at that time, but if no

canals near there...?

There is a newspaper report 1886 about a disturbance at "Callow Brook Lane, the Whetty".
You can find the Old Plough Inn at Rubery, and nearby are Callowbrook Lane and Whetty Lane.

Have found The Plough Inn with a nearby Whetty Farm and Whetty Coppice on an 1887 OS Map. But not 'THE Whetty'

Thank you to all who have replied.

I know that in 1871 cens. gg.grandfather was living on a boat, so I'm almost certain that he was in 1869.The newspaper report said
that timber belonging to him had been damaged, and a person was fined.
I suppose it's possible he may have had timber stored at Whetty.

Hi here is a map of whetty Lane and whetty coppice all of which have a Bromsgrove postal district and are all in Worcestershire.  The black line on the right made up of dots and crosses is the Birmingham Worcs., border also if you look carefully you will see at the end of Whetty Lne a tributary of the Callowbrook which may not be much of a river nowadays but 100 years ago who knows.

 Thank you for the map.

It's possible that if there was a canal there, may now be completely overgrown.
