Dodbrooke in Devon is part of Kingsbridge
http://genuki.cs.ncl.ac.uk/DEV/Dodbrooke/

John Bull
Arrived Port Phillip Jan 1840

Harriet CROSS, 22, single, housemaid, native of Kingsbridge, Protestant

My Phillimores tells me that there are no Dodbrooke parish registers included in the IGI index  :P  There do seem to be some events for Dodbrooke on FamilySearch, but mostly non-conformist.

So perhaps we can tick her surname and time in the colonies as being correct.

Debra  :)

Hello Raylen, I am writing to make a comment on your post for Mary Jane Cross.
I understand that Mary Jane was very young (approx 15) when she married Michael James Burns. They had 2 children (twins) Catherine (my grandmother) & Patrick Emmett (know as Emmett is my grand uncle) who disappeared. Therefore Mary Jane Burns is my great grandmother. I would love to hear from you as I am trying to understand this part of my family history. I am a beginner to this sort of thing and as we are having a special family occasion coming up I googled my grand uncles name which led me to this site and your post. Cheers Euroa (Tim)

Hi Raylen,  :D
It is a small world & I am very surprised to have your response as I thought it would have disappeared into the ether, I am very delighted it hasn't. I have 2 cousins on my Grandmother's side who are still alive and my Mother passed away 17 years ago so time is running out to be able to make some sense of this part of my family. Look forward to our next chat. Cheers Euroa (Tim)

I think I can help solve the riddle of the many names of Mary Jane Cross (aka Monro, Monroe, Munro, Bunting and Burns). Cross was her original maiden name (Mother was Harriet Cross) and she was illegitimate apparently. Her father was Henry Monro (various spellings exist) and her first husband was William Bunting of Longwood (Ruffy, Tarcombe) area in Victoria, Australia. He had recently arrived from Armagh County, N Ireland.
I descend from these two. After William's death she used either her Bunting or Cross or Monro  surnames to keep us on our toes. Then she married the Mr Burns mentioned earlier. She was the one who was really just 16 or 17 years old when she married William, despite what the marriage record says.

I have written an article for the UK-based Bunting Society covering this issue and it is online now. "A line of Buntings from Northern Ireland".

It seems that Mary had a relative Thomas Cross who had a son, John Cross. Confusingly, Thomas's wife was Harriet. I dont think this was Harriet Cross who was Mary's mother, but it is possible. To keep things nicely entangled, Elizabeth Cross, the daughter of John Cross, married a Bunting relative. This was another William Bunting, son of William from Armagh. This second William (my great grand father) lived in Euroa where I was conceived, prior to being born in Benalla nearby.

It has been a nightmare sorting these puzzles out over the last several years, and I may not be there yet!

Frank
