Thank you for your replies. I have found an obituary on Dr Thomas young cotter, but it doesn't say where he was buried. I'd love to find his grave. Would anyone have this info?  Regards Netty

Hi NettyBetty,

Welcome and guess you and I are cousins .... remote but family none the less as TY Cotter is my GGG grandfather too.

I can fill you in on his live and times in South Aust if you want. I have information that Bryan sent me a while back on the irish side and is all good information.

I would like to know your lineage too please so I can update my tree.  If you send me message I will give you my email address ..... but I will be abck at sea this weekend and may not have internet coverage until we get back to Australia, ... new ship and no idea of what comms gear we have.  Bryan is probably laughing

Enjoy the adventure and he was certainly an interesting man and very important part of SA's history

David

 :)  :)  :)

Sorry,  I am not familiar with researching South Australian family histories,  but fingers crossed the following links will help with clues re the grave ... seems to be 'Port Augusta Old.'

https://www.genealogysa.org.au/index.php?option=com_search&Itemid=32 - enter COTTER and 1882
and
http://www.ozburials.com/CemsSA/portaugold.htm  - perhaps consider a donation ...

I have TYC grave and a photo off google. Use my e-mail address shown in my website swanseamariners.org.uk then I can  then exchange photographs. Etc  Have what is believed to be a oil miniture of TY cotter’s father’ and mother.  I repeat that a lot of Website info on TY Cotters biography is incorrect constructed from family myths.     I have extended family information of TY cotter’s siblings, complete career and every ship of his father.

Regards
Bryan

Without sidetracking too far,  here’s some info that I consider to be from reliable sources.  :)

I am not a relative, but I am very interested in NSW families from as early as 1787 through to  pre the gold rushes of the 1850s.    There's a chap, named John Thomas YOUNG who arrived steerage, in Sydney, NSW per the British Sovereign, 18 September 1834 See NSW State Archives, 4/5207, entry 29015.   You will likely find other sightings at their indexes:  https://www.records.nsw.gov.au/archives/collections-and-research/guides-and-indexes/indexes-a-z  and at https://www.records.nsw.gov.au/

For that 1834 arrival :  :D

https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/12850505 Sydney Herald 22 Sept 1834

trove is more than just the digitised newspapers, here’s the main link: https://trove.nla.gov.au/ it is free to search, and you can download from there too, no charge.
