1837? Marriage
« on: Wednesday 16 June 04 19:42 BST (UK) »
Be grateful if anyone can suggest how to find the marriage record of my GGGF, James Horstead to what looks like Mary Ann on the 1851 census for Stepney, St George in the East.

The wife's birthplace is given as Middlesex, St Georges.  The oldest child is 13 so I suppose we are talking 1838 at a push!

Cant find their marriage anywhere.  Found an Ann Horstead death record 1868 with the right age for the wife and in the same area.

Any suggestions gratefully received.

Hi,

FreeBMD has this one:

Surname  First name(s)    District  Vol  Page
~~~~~~~~
Marriages Mar 1854
~~~~~~~~
Charlesworth  Mary    Bethnal Grn  1c 443
Horstead        James   Bethnal G     1c 443

I know it is later than you are looking for,  but it is not uncommon for marriages to take place after some children,  even in this period.
It may be worth looking into the details.

Many thanks,  this is the only one I could find too but it does seem a bit strange to marry after 17 years?

Ill check it out.  I originally needed the cert for the father's name of my GGGF but fortunately I have managed to by pass this as on the census the birth place was shown for him and I have tracked him down to a village just 3 miles from where I live in Norfolk now.  In one fell swoop I have then gone back another 2 generations further.

But it would have been nice to have details about the wife.  I shall continue checking.

Many thanks for bothering to look up for me, very grateful.

No bother hethmar,

As you know FreeBMD is a work in progress,  so another may yet turn up.   ;D

And as you are hoping to find it in 1837/8 where the actual registrations are not always made,  Bishop's Transcripts or Parish Records may be your best bet anyway.

Have you tried BIVRI,  if not put a request on the Request board as we do have an offer for lookups.  It may even be a little earlier than 1837.

There are still roads to explore.  ;D

Many thanks I will try that too.

Yes, I have recently become a volunteer for BMD because I do believe people should have free access to the records.  I wish more people would volunteer!!!  Must be plenty out there who could spare a couple of hours a month!

To Kazza, do you mind if I ask a question?
What is the BIVRI? what is it's purpose, how does it help in research?
Thanks, Newbie

Hi again,

BI VRI is the British Isles Vital Records Index.  The BIVRI is made of the Bishop's Transcripts of some parish records.  It has Births,  Marriages and Deaths,  but only those that were made available to the Church of the Latter Day Saints (Mormans).

There are 2 editions and we have volunteer/s offering lookups on the requests board on v2.

The Bishop's transcripts are of course the copies of parish registers that are held by the church,  not all were made available to the LDS.

Since you bring in Norfolk would it be worth looking at the entry below? Jonas might be a mis read for James, it shouldn't be as it has been double keyed but if the place is a possible and there is a Mary Pert on the same page I think it could be worth looking into it if it is not too much hassle.

From FBMD:

Marriages Jun 1838

HORSTEAD  Jonas    Henstead  13 249
Rose (Black Country),Downs (Black Country),Wolloxall (any and all),Bark (Derbyshire),Wright (Derbyshire),Marsden (Derbyshire), Wallace (Black Country)
