It does look like Garryrue ..

maybe it's a local name for a section of the town, rather than an actual townland ?

It seems fairly clear that it is Garryrue Carrick on Suir but  doesn't help as to where the townland is. This maybe grasping at straws but.... there is a Garnarea or Garrynarea which is over the border in Kilkenny between Pilltown and Carrick. While the placename database shows it in Co Kilkenny Bassets Directory of Tipperary 1889 gives Garrynarea Carrick on Suir.
It probably is just on the borders between Kilkenny and Tipperary.
It could be worthwhile looking at the census in Kilkenny just in case.

I checked three directories for Carrick-on Suir -Bassetts 1889 Slater 1856 and Pigots 1827 and there is no reference to a Garryrue/Garryroe in the town unfortunately. The nearest is Garnarea/Garrynarea

There is website for the town
http://www.carrickonsuir.info/

Maybe posting a query there could turn up something.

Thanks for all your help, you've offered a few possibilities that I will keenly explore.  Its only a small detail, but you never know what it may lead too.  Also, when you only have a few pieces of 'definate' info, its satisfying to know that at least you have them correct.

Hi, Garryrue was a local name in the town of Carrick on Suir at the turn of the 19th-20th Century. Its Gaelic name was Garrai Rua (Red Gardens) anglicised to Garryrue. The Garryrue extended from the rear of Lough St to the rear of New St, Carrick (the present Pearse Square). Hope this is of some help.

hi hannomd01,
i live in carrick and would like to let you know that the garryrue was an area in the town, opposite the green, it was a laneway near the centre of the town. just in case you have been able to confirm where it was, it is now known in the area of Pierce Square. my mother was also born there. hope this helps, and hope you get this as i am new to this page.

Thanks for this information.  Finding out this place name is just a small piece of a very large puzzle.  Lots still to find out, but every little helps.

Garryrue  is  the corrupted version of  'An gáirdín Rua.'  (The red garden)  Yes, it was in the area that is now known as Pearse Sguare.  It extends from what was Town Wall down to 'The Green'.   With Lough Street on west side of it and New Street on the east side.  ( a layperson's guide)  Am open to correction on this, but It is the general area..
