Do you have Charles death certificate?

An online tree suggests that the first Elizabeth was Elizabeth BARTLETT (1818-15 July 1885) but there is no supporting documentation.

I wonder how long the first Elizabeth had been at Ararat; there is a date of 1868 mentioned above.  this would suggest that Charles Francis's parents could well have been Charles and Elizabeth SHANNON/SHANAHAN who were not free to marry until after the first Elizabeth died.

Elizabeth (1) was I think, too old to be having children at that stage (1875) and it would appear, was committed from as early as 1868

Unfortunately I don't have Charles death certificate .  it is a very interesting thought that Elizabeth was in an asylum and Charles later remarried. If if 2nd wife was young enough he may have had more children.

I cannot see a marriage for Charles and the first Elizabeth on Free BMD or on FamilySearch.  I cannot see him or his parents on 1851 census although some of his siblings are there. Some of them seem to have moved away from Dorset by 1851.

Not sure if you know that you can download certificates from Victoria for $17.50 - Charles' death certificate should give you both marriages and any children.  Of course, the validity of the info depends on the knowledge of the informant.  As Charles was so old when he died it's possible that an informant may not know details of his early life.

Possible baptism of Charles' mother, Mary GREENING.

The 1841 census has her birth around 1797 and born in Dorset.
