Hello!
I am seeking information about my Irish Charlton roots and have hit a roadblock for years.
What I do know concerns the following ancestors who (perhaps other than Bernard) arrived in Quebec City, Quebec, Canada in about 1840.
All were born in Ireland and appear to have been Roman Catholic.
Husband: Bernard Charlton (abt.1790-bef.1855)
Wife: (m. abt. 1820) Anne Macdonald (abt.1797-1868), had Berlin-Wool shop in Quebec
Son: Richard (abt.1821-1851) - called to the Quebec Bar in 1844
Son: Edward John (abt.1827-1902) - newspaper editor in 1850s
Son: James Bernard (abt.1830-1865) - lumber merchant in 1850s.
According to the "Memoirs of My Mother, Mary Octavia Charlton", privately published in 1929, Richard Charlton was born in Clones, County Monaghan, Ireland, October 16, 1821 and attended Trinity College, Dublin before coming to Toronto, Ontario, Canada as a tutor, after which he settled in Quebec City becoming a lawyer only to die in 1851, age 30, during a cholera epidemic (pages 11-14).
Unfortunately, verification of the list of graduates of Trinity failed to confirm this. In addition, doubt was raised that a Catholic would have been accepted at Trinity at that time.
Any information you might have about these people or, more generally, about Irish Catholic Charltons of that time would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

RCharlton, there are a few irish sites you could look at that may provide info on the Charlton ancestors.
www.rootsireland.ie  In co monaghan there are Census Substitute records from 1663, 1665, 1829, 1833.
Anne Charleton mentioned in Tithe Books in 1833 in Townland of TULLY, Parish of DONAGH Co Monaghan.
The above is a pay site who have a 40% discount at present when you purchase any relevant records. You will have to register on the site to proceed.
3 Marriage records, 1826, 1858 & 1864.
www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith valuation has 25 records for Charletons.
Hope the above may prove fruitful in your search. Regards Frances

Many thanks!
Unfortunately, after verification, none of these appear at first light to be relevant.
It's frustrating as all the census and other Canadian records clearly indicate these Charltons came from Ireland, yet I have found no Irish records to confirm this.
Another quirk is that these Charltons are said to be Catholic while that surname is usually associated with the Protestant religions.
The search goes on...
Anyone have any good ideas?
Thanks,
Robert

It only takes one Catholic woman 'marrying in' to turn a family with a Protestant sounding name an RC one, so that could be the explanation.
