Hanwell Lunatic Asylum
« on: Wednesday 07 September 11 14:35 BST (UK) »
Hi Everyone,

I need some advice please.  I believe I have an ancestor who was in Hanwell Asylum.  On the 1901 census there are just her initials listed and not her full name.

I live in the North of England so getting to the National Archives is a little difficult.  Does anyone know how I could prove it is her??

Thanks in advance for any help.

Have you looked on the 1891 and 1911 censuses?  If she was there in either of those years, it may give her full name.

Thanks for replying.

She's not there on the 1891 but I do know where she is.  And again on the 1911 there are just initials, so it might not even be her.

I'm stuck  ???

If there are just initials, what makes you think it is your ancestor? Do you have other documentation that tells you she was in Hanwell asylum?

If the same person appears in the 1911 census still in the asylum, have you looked for a death for her registered in the area after 1911?

There are only initials but I really believe it to be her.

She disappears from the 1901 and 1911 censuses after the death of her daughter at the beginning of 1901.  Her other children are found with her parents and her husband is living with his brother.

Her death isn't until 1935 where she is back in Camberwell.  But I have no idea how to trace her from 1911 to 1935.

I have tried every possible variant of her name and always come up with nothing, except initials.

The records of Hanwell Lunatic Asylum are held by the London Metropolitan Archives, so it might be worth contacting them to see if they have any details about her.
