another mystery soldier
« on: Saturday 10 September 11 21:02 BST (UK) »
There is an inscription on the postcard on the back of the photograph. It says 12th Royal Scots and has the surname Eades. I will try to attach the photograph and the rear of the postcard in this thread.

here is the photograph. Not sure if this was a relative or not or maybe someone famous. The postcard has a studio in Portobello, Edinburgh on the front at the bottom of the photograph.

I'm opening it up for any suggestions now.

W E,

Try William Geddes 3327, Royal Scots.

He has two MICs, the one under W Geddes will be for the DCM.

Thanks Phil,

yes found out some info today on Ancestry.

There is a memorial at Invergordon for William Geddes who was a Private in the Seaforth Highlanders. So that means that he died. So I will check on European War Graves to see where he was killed.

He was in the 12th Royal Scots regiment where his regiment number was 3327. He had two ranks. One was a Sergeant and an Acting Warrant Officer Class 2. He was also a Acting Company Sergeant Major. He was awarded a medal for having Shrapnel wounds in his back in France in 1916.

He has served in the Seaforth Highlanders and Royal Engineers.

He was born in Paisley, Renfrewshire. He was aged 19 when in the war and his trade was an Electrical Labourer.

The mystery continues here Phil as the CWGC site has two W. Geddes listed as being casualties.

Number one was a Private in the 4th Bn. of the Seaforth Highlanders. He died on 10th October 1914 and his service number is 1524.
He is buried in Bedford Cemetery, Bedfordshire.

Number two was a Private in the 6th Bn. of the Seaforth Highlanders. He died on 9th April 1917 and his service number is 266000.
He is buried in Highland Cemetery, Roclincourt, France.

So how do we decide which one won the medals as they both lost their lives.

Wilton
He doesnt appear to be a casualty?
19 seems too young for the photo and also the Warrant Officer rank?

He is neither of the two listed

Okay Ady,

so it must be the third W. Geddes that we are following.

The third one being 3327 who was a Sgt in the Royal Scots/12.

And he was still alive in France in 1915. This third one won a (15) Star (Roll) D/46B page 29. British and Victory D/101 and B/3 page 246. All these being medals.

Yes id go with that... :) also he should have a citation for the DCM in the London Gazette hopefully.
If he continued to serve after WW1 into the 20s the MOD probably still have his record.
