The Beeches, Chester Rd, Hartford
« on: Saturday 17 September 11 23:06 BST (UK) »
Hi there

Does anyone know what The Beeches, Chester Road, Hartford was used for  1939 - 1940 ish.  I know it is a listed building built for a Salt Baron, but what else was it used for. ? WW! refugees or workhouse.

Hi, Original request was made some time ago, so I don't know if this will reach anyone who's still interested.
My Grandfather lived at The Beeches in the 30's.  His mother was certainly there in the 40s.  My mother used to stay/live with her at one time and often spoke of her time there.

Hi there

Did they take in lodgers?  I ask this because my son-in-law's grandfather fled Nazi Germany in 1939 - 1940 (German Jew) and his first address was listed as The Beeches, Chester Road, Hartford.  He was a student Electrical Engineer.

Hi Mo,
There were no lodgers there as far as I know - never heard speak of this.
I am trying to find out dates from/to when the family were in residence there.
My G. Grandparents were Albert & Edith Kennerley  I know my Grandfather, Cpt George W. Kennerley gave it as his address in 1925 (he was 25yrs old and married)  Edith was there at her death in, I think, 1957.
Regards, Amanda

Hi Amanda

Thanks for the reply.

Unfortunately, Kennerley isn't a name I am familiar with so I can't establish a link.

I have a record of Joachim Kretschmer living there on 27 May 1940 as a Student Engineer.

If the name Kennerley crops up in the future I will get in touch.

Thanks for your interest.

I would be interested to know if any more facts about The Beeches, Hartford have surfaced.  My son now lies there and it is of great interest to me.

Hello

Checked out the 1939 Register:

Joachim M Kretschmer born 1.4.1916, Civil Engineer Road Construction was living at The Beeches, Chester Road Northwich (Hartford).

Hermina M Rooney born 4.5.1905, Domestic Servant, married, was also living there.

There are 3 locked persons.

Strange, my mother was born in Northwich and so I know the place well. My grandfather, Christian Pfisterer (angliczed to "Louis Fisher") on the Register was still alive. I found some Barton and Whitlow relatives living nearby which I would never have found otherwise.

It's been a very interesting journey!!
