Audley Emigrated 1890 from Liverpool to Montreal
« on: Thursday 22 September 11 22:14 BST (UK) »
Hi, Can anybody help?

I have:
Robert Audley born 1879, he emigrated from Liverpool, as an orphan to Montreal Canada in 1890
and his brother
James Audley born 1883, he also emigrated from Liverpool, as an orphan to Montreal Canada in 1890.

Can any body tell me, what happened to them on arrival in Canada. I have a little information about them. It suggests that their surname might have changed to Audlee.

Many thanks in anticipation of your help
Regards
Brian

Whether this is your Robert or not?
Archives of Ontario
Death, Robert Audley single age 22 a labourer 29 May 1900 at Pine Street Division of Esockville(?) County of Leeds Ontario.
Born England, single, Roman Catholic.

I also notice on his and James shipping record in 1890 that they were in "Mrs Lacey's party of 18"  bound for Kingston then 3 initials G J(or of) K Montreal.

1901 Census of Canada
Kingston City Frontenec Ward Ontario.
James Audley age 8 born England. Nationality of mother and fther Irish. Religion Roman Catholic.

It looks as if he is in a children's home of some kind as the page has many children with different surnames.

That would be "G T R", Grand Trunk Railway, that they'd have headed for Kingston on. The GTR doesn't exist anymore.

Hi Crisane and China,

Many thanks for your help.
Can I be a bit cheeky and ask for a bit more information?
Chrisane mentions the 'shipping record' of Robert & James Audley. As they were both orphans aged 11 and 7 respectively when they emigrated., it seems logical that they would be in Mrs Lacey's party of 18. Would it be possible for you to tell me the exact date they arrived in Canada and if possible on what ship.

With regard to the 1901 census of Canada it seems likely that James would end up in an orphanage in Kingston City as that ties up with the Kingston referred to in the Shipping record. However I would have expected him to be 18 years old rather than 8. Would it be possible for you to give me the address of the childrens home?

The death of Robert Audley on 29 May 1900, is probably not the Robert Audley I am after as it has been sugested that Robert Audley married a Hattie F Willey. and they had a child in 1901. I suspect Roberts surname changed from Audley to Audlee.

Here's a link to the Home Children database entry for Robert Audley at Library and Archives Canada which has the shipping information:

And here's a link to an image of the passenger list also at the LAC website (they are the second and third last children mentioned in the first ticket number group of children in Mrs. Lacey's party):

Here is the image of the manifest page from Aarchives Canada. (cross-posted with Jacquie)

The ship was the Parisian ... see top of page. Their port of landing was Montreal but then they travelled to Kingston by train with Mrs Lacey's group.

There is an extensive resource section here on the RootsChat Canada Board related to Home Children at this link.
