India: Finding the death + marriage of Indian army officer's wife
« on: Monday 26 September 11 22:23 BST (UK) »
I've asked about this before but thought I might find more luck in the other countries section:
Harriet Court married John Edward Gabriel on the 9th of June 1804 and died 14 Jan 1835. John Edward was born 25 APR 1780 in Hanworth and died 23 MAR 1815 in Nandydroog, India. He was a major in the 12th NI (he was in the British Indian army). They Had 4 children as far as I'm aware:

Harriett b 23 MAY 1809 Madras, d 11 JAN 1816
Ellen Ann (my ggg grandmother) b 16 APR 1811, Madras, married Henry Cremer
Emma/Elizabeth b 22 APR 1813, Quilon, married Edward Kilvert
Jane Eliza b 4 MAY 1815 Bangalore d 19 SEP 1904 Surrey

Harriet died 14 JAN 1835. I don't know where she was married or where she died (possibly India though), so finding marriage/death records is a bit tricky. This means I can't find out who her parents were, or any other family members.
Your help would be appreciated.

Hi Flynn Theo,

We have gathered some useful links for researching in India here:
Topic: INDIA: Resources for Ancestors in British India
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,30580.0.html

These include some online databases (e.g. fibis) and some addresses where Indian Army or Indian Civil Service records can be found.

Have a browse ....  :)

Good luck,
Bob

John Edward Gabriel married Harriott Court in London, at St James' Piccadilly, 9 June 1804. The register is marked L which I would think means it was by licence.

The register has no other information.

There's a public tree on Ancestry that has John Edward Gabriel as a Major in the East India Company's Wallajhbad Light Infantry in 1804.

However the listing of officers of the Madras Army records that he became a cadet in 1795, Lieutenant on 29 Nov 1797, Captain on 5 Sep 1804 and Major on 6 Nov 1811.

Thank you all very much.
Does anyone use an ancestry.com account and would be willing to search her burial record for me? My subscription just run out the other day and there is a hint for her burial record in the London, England Deaths and Burials 1913-1980 Record. If I could find out at least where she was buried, I might be able to see her gravestone which would most likely have her birth date on it.
