1882 Immigrants Australia
« on: Sunday 02 October 11 11:21 BST (UK) »
My GG Aunt Christiana jane Gillett bn 1857 islington, found in 1881 census working as a nurse in eggesford house devon for the earl of Portsmouth. She sailed on the Dorunda from plymouth to brisbane 1882. I have located her on the electrol roles in Darling downs Toowoomba , working as a matron. She died in 1940, never married, I am curious to find out why she left England any suggestions please Thanks Pat

Hi Pat

Found this post interesting and found the Dorunda sailing to Brisbane on 16th February 1882.  Cannot get into the passengers list unfortunately.
If you look at sites which give you the story of Australia you could take
a guess as to why she went there.
If she was a Nurse she was qualified to do something which was needed
wherever you went.  She was also a woman and if you see that there were
more men in Australia than women then she would have been wanted there.
She did well not to get married.
I read something from a diary of a lady in Oz in about 1853.  She states
that it was a place of Milk and Honey and if you were a woman not to
be afraid of going if you could milk a cow, make food, etc so be a practical
person and you would be cherished 20 times more than you would
if you stayed in England.
So that to me looks a good reason.
I also read that women alone who landed were put up in barracks and
protected from danger until they either got married or in your Aunts
case found a job again as a nurse.
The other reason could be she went with the Dukes staff but as mentioned
i cant get onto the list at the moment to check if she went with anyone.

regards

Thank you so much !!! :) what a find!!  This must be her, I found information that she was a superintendent at the Jubilee Sanitorium in Dalby. She seem's a very caring person. I believe she was a nurse to the Earl of Portsmouths children when she was in Devon England. It has taken me about 2yrs to track her down to Australia, I can't thank you enough for this info!! Pat
