Berkshire Marriage Index
« Reply #4 on: Wednesday 18 October 06 20:39 BST (UK) »
There is some confusion over the various marriage indexes available for Berkshire. To avoid explaining it each time it comes up here is the situation (as far as I know it).

There are 3 Marriage Indexes:

1.    The Brooks Berkshire Marriage Index
Covers all of Berkshire to 1837 plus some later. Original is a slip index - not readily accessible. Microfilm copies are held at Berkshire Record Office, Oxfordshire Record Office, Abingdon Library (there may be more copies).
Of more interest to most - the LDS has a copy see http/makeashorterlink.com/?P2AA32EFD link not working
The late John Brooks was a prolific transcriber whose work is invaluable but is prone to errors. There are some entries that cannot be traced to a primary source (he included data from marriage licenses and wills).
Coverage is good but not complete.

2.    Berks FHS Berkshire Marriage Index
Covers parishes from old Berkshire that remained in Berkshire after the 1974 boundary changes. Dates to 1837. Only available via Berks FHS - on computer in their Research Centre or via their search services (www.berksfhs.org.uk).  A work in progress, coverage good, quality good.

3.  OFHS North Berks Marriage Index
Covers parishes administered by Oxfordshire CC since 1974 . Dates to 1851. Another work in progress - available at the Centre for Oxfordshire Studies and Oxfordshire Record Office (I think) and via OFHS search services (www.ofhs.org.uk)

I am sure any errors in this will be corrected by those who know better.

Berkshire Wills & Probate
« Reply #5 on: Monday 26 March 07 00:59 BST (UK) »
Many Berkshire wills were proved in the Consistory Court of the Bishop of Salisbury - and hence appear in the online index at http://history.wiltshire.gov.uk/heritage/

Some are available as free downloads - the rest will be added in the future.
