Walters family from Lambeth
« on: Tuesday 11 October 11 15:24 BST (UK) »
Hello,

I'm struggling to find out what happened to my x2 gt grandfather on my mothers side.

George Walters b.1850 Lambeth
Married Mary Ann Lambert  1873 (i'm hoping this is right)
There is a step-daughter in 1881 called Jane Turner (mother is Mary Ann)
In 1881 his occupation is coachman

This is as far as i have got with him.
In 1901 Mary Ann is a widow, so that means George died between 1881 and 1901, but I can't find anything at all.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.  :)

They were together on the 1871 census.  George was 25 and Mary 30.  Daughter Jane Turner on the 1881 census was listed as Sarah J Walters.

This looks a more likely marriage:

George Walters and Mary A Turner Lambeth September Quarter 1866 volume 1d page 380.

Thank you.

I'm really confused now.

I have George's father as Charles and his mother Sarah.

The 1881 census is showing as having a Jane Turner (age 65) living with George and his family. It says that his mother's name is Jane Turner.
This is where i'm confused.... The Jane Turner, who looks like is also called Sarah J Walters is George's step-daughter in 1881 (her mothers name is Mary Ann)
So, if George's mother is Jane Turner, then why has his step-daughter got the same name as his mother?

I can't seem to find that marriage either or a death for George.

Hi,

I really think that it is an error on the 1881 census and Jane Turner was Mary Anns mother. It is always possible the Mary Ann filled in the schedule and so wrote Mother instead of Mother in Law to George.   I think you will find Mary Ann aged 15  ::) born Streatham and mother Jane born East Grinstead together on the 1851 census.  Mary Ann is obviously being economical with her age from 1871 to 1901.

The marriage of George to Mary Ann does not appear to be online so the only way of finding out if it is the correct marriage would be to send for the certificate.

This, I realise doesn`t help us with Georges death as yet.

Thank you for that.

I will send off for the certificate later. Hopefully it'll be the one and that will help me with George's father.

Looks like Jane Turner (of Sarah J Walters) was an illegitimate child, as well as her mother Mary Ann. I don't see any other information for there being any fathers for either of them.
