my Aunt was called Polly - her real name was Jane but because one of her cousins was called Jane they 'changed' my aunts name to Polly to avoid confusion.

I've found two separate instances of Marthas being known as Pattie.

My book of names cites Mattie and Pattie as two of the earliest pet names for Martha.

I stumbled across this thread as I was looking for a connection between the names Martha and May. I’ve read that May was a common pet name for Mary and Margaret, but also possibly for Martha.
I have an ancestor who was called May Busby. I have her census and marriage records but have been struggling to pinpoint her birth (and older relatives) because I’m guessing she wasn’t born May.
Using her place and year of birth (Brixton 1865) and fathers name at marriage (Henry) I searched high and low for different name variants and the only one that made sense was born Martha.

Hi,
I came across a mention of a 'Jim and Pattie' who  turned out to be 'Richard James (Jim) who married Martha Margaret (Pattie)'.

A  Margaret confusingly always referred to as "Polly" caused me some issues when trying to find someone for a friend. I'd not realised it was used. apparently it's something to do with Margeurite - Pearl - Polly.
