Louth any help BRANAGAN
« on: Wednesday 26 October 11 15:09 BST (UK) »
Hello all,
Apologies for any muppetry but I am new to this forum.

I have come up against a 'brick wall' in my research.
I am trying to trace my Great Grandad Thomas Branagan bc1828.
The first time the family appears is on the English 1881 census living in Manchester. It says that he is from Louth, married to Sarah Ann with 8 children ranging from 3 - 16 years. They don't appear on any previous census or any after. Some of the children appear later i.e my Grandad.

Sarah Ann comes from Liverpool, so I assume they met & married in England.
I know Branagan is quite a common name in Ireland so I don't expect anyone can help.. But I feel I must try.
Any pointers would be greatly appreciated. I would dearly love to visit Ireland in the future but an idea of where my family come from would give me added impetus.

Many thanks.

Mike

Unfortunately you need a bit more detail to start a search for  Thomas - i.e. the denomination of your Branagan family, and where in Co. Louth they lived, ideally the parish, or townland.

Not all parishes have records back to the 1820s, so you need to check the availability first.

I think it would be worth having another search for the marriage as a cert could give you details of his father which might help...

were any of the children born in Ireland ?

there's a possible birth for the youngest Branagan child on FreeBMD :

  Quarter/Year : Dec 1877
  Name: Ellen Ann Branagan
  Registration District : Manchester
  Volume: 8d / Page: 289

If correct the birth cert would show Sarah's maiden name which should help in the search for the marriage..

Shane,

Crikey! you're good!
Thanks for that I'll start down that route.
It just seems that they were plonked into Manchester from nowhere.

Thanks again, off to the records for me.

Shane,
Thanks for your help. I've applied for Ellen Ann's birth cert.

I await it's delivery.

Cheers.
